Trying to decide on a new 19" monitor between the Sony G400 and Samsung 900NF.

I had a Sony G200 for a while. From what I've seen the Sony blows away all other monitors in terms of colour vibrancy and realism. I got a demo of the 900NF today and the geoemtry on it was no better than I've seen with the Sony's and the picture didn't seem as good, although I couldn't do a side-by-side comparison.

It looks to me like if you want to save money and get a good monitor, get the Samsung but if you want the best picture, get the Sony.

Looking for other opinions.

agree with you. I think Sony still makes the best monitor, but with the highest price.

Yup, seen a lot of these lately. When price is not a concern, a Sony is the best. However, there are many other monitors that are very close to the quality but significantly less in cost which makes them a more attractive buy.

I use a Sony E400 at home and the Samsung 900NF at work. The sony does have a better picture but for the price the Samsung is nice as well. Personally I would go for the Sony and I can tell the difference when I come home and fire up my computer.

I have a sony g400 and love it. I considered the Samsung but it had a much bigger footprint than the g400 did and deskspace was important to me. And for anybody that says 2-3 inches isn't a big difference, doesn't know what he's talking about cuz on a cramp desk, EVERY inch makes a difference. I think the length of the Samsung is around 60 inches while the Sony G400 is at 54 or 57 i think.

The footprint of the samsung may be bigger...but I wouldn't say that the Sony E400 has a better picture than the Samsung 900NF. I used both extensively and I chose the Samsung 900NF which I currently own....because it had sharper text and the overall picture quality was pretty much the same to me. The Sony seems to have a softer picture overall. The Samsung has a sharper picture and since it has more adjustment features I was able to fine tune the tube at every corner which I think is really nice. A voodoo3 3000 was used on the Sony and a voodoo3 3500TV on the samsung. I guess what matters most is what looks good to the buyer/user's eyes.

Which video card do you have?

Most of the time it doesn't make a huge difference, but nVidia cards don't go with Trinitron monitors very well at all. If you have two nV boards and hook up a G400 and 900NF side by side the 900NF will look significantly better. Matrox and ATi seem to like Sony's Trinitron based monitors the best(though the difference is minor in comparison) and from what I have seen the 3dfx boards don't seem to care much at all, fairly difficult to tell the difference though they seem solid on all monitors.

I have a voodoo3 3500TV....I love the 2D clarity and the sharpness of it...that's the main reason why I still have it. I don't feel like coughing up $200+ for a new videocard. If I was to get a new videocard to go along with my Samsung 900NF, it'd probably be an ATI Radeon 32MB DDR ...cuz that card seems to be reasonably priced right now. I've used a Hercules MX...and that seems to have pretty good 2D ..but I only used it at 1024x768 so its hard to say whether it has sharp 2D or not.

You forget the lines are there after you use it for a while. Also, the 900IFT has lower refresh rates than the 900NF.

I think benskywalker brought up a good point. For me, I think that both the Samsung 900NF and Sony G400 all look great and it bascially comes down to the individual eyes and teh system that they are running with.

For example, everybody knows that if you use a DVD decoder card, you are gonna use a video pass over cable and that reduces image quality. Not to mention different video cards have different text quality as well. Alot of nvidia users have mention how their 2D quality is horrid.

IT also depends on the eyes too. Some people might think that it's the sharpest image ever, which other people think it's blurry, lol.
