lol@OP. SONY has been making Android phones for years but this year phones are phenominal. I just returned from Japan and their new flagship there, the Xperia GX, is a thing of beauty. There is an international flagship coming in conjunction with the Skyfall movie so that is the one for me.

Well I can understand why someone in the US might be surprised to know Sony has been making Android stuff for a while. Doesn't seem like any of their Android phones and tablets have done well at all here.

If I had to list Android manufactures by name, I'd probably even mention Huawei before Sony and I don't know if I even spelled their name right. :)

I read tech news sites so I knowledge they've been making Android phones for the while but I'm sure the average person doesn't know about them. They're never talked about.

Sony's main problem isn't the OS. Its the lackluster branding, hit or miss materials, and obscure phone names.

If they used their own powerful SoCs and SLCD2 screens, with a clear brand name along market segments, then they'd sell a lot of more phones.

I think it just has to do with the fact that Sony doesn't have that great of a relationship with the US carriers. During the dumbphone era, SE dumbphones were excellent and highly regarded. They had some of the best cameras, and their Walkman line was really the beginning of MP3 phones. All this was taking place while the US was stuck on RaZrs and unable to copy MP3s over, and the only way you could have custom ringtones was to pay up the wazoo... lol

Actually before the RAZR even existed, Nokias could play mp3's and use custom ring tones. They just didnt have the pretty menus of Sony.

Yes, Sony has made some fantastic phones, but they're often very late or non existent here in the US, which is unfortunate.

I can see them dropping out though.

Once the smartphone market matures, and with the dominance of Samsung, the smaller manufacturers may see it too taxing or not worth their while.

it's like how in the IBM clone market, it's essentially dominated by HP, Acer, Lenovo, etc. I'm surprised LG and others still make smartphones, their marketshare must be minimal.

its an s3 cpu while everyone else on the market has s4. Not like you should see a difference iin performance but why would they take a step backwards from the competition.

Pretty sure the phone in the 1st post is a budget line phone. They have high-end S4 phones.

Also, I believe they are trying to restructure and become more competitive. That's why they bought Ericson's share of the mobile division.

Dropping out of a critical sector? Dropping out after buying out Ericsson? I doubt it. SONY saves their best for Europe and Japan. And they are true gems. I am looking forward to the international version of the GX, which should come out when Skyfall comes out.

Really?

I hardly ever see anyone using a Sony phone.

England does not count:biggrin: I've seen them when I was in Germany...

I've seen them its just they are competing with really good Samsung and HTC phones at the moment which are definitely the consumers first choice (on Android).

I'm sure you will be seeing more going forward. SONY is going crazy with all the new Xperias. They may have more Xperias than Samsung has Galaxy phones.

The reality is that Sony has been hurt by not streamlining its operations. They have multiple divisions that dont even bother to work together and at times even work against each other. With the purchase of Ericsson and the recent decision to move the R&D division to Japan i think next year will be different for Sony

It'll be nice if they do actually follow through this time.

There seems to a few handset makers upping their game at the moment. LG has some interesting things coming as well.

The same goes for Samsung but they seem to manage.

Not quite. Samsungs foundry essentially operates on its own but their other divisions work together. Samsung phones use Samsung NAND and panels as an example and they are all based out of Korea with the exception for the new Texas plant (wich is dedicated to Apple anyway)

Sony had music/movies in the USA, gaming divisions in 3 continents, various hardware production in Japan (panels, disc drives etc) and their mobile division was split between Sweden and Japan. The reason why Sony was always late hardware wise is because the decision making took far more time than it should have because decisions were coming from 2 different directions

Their main problems has always been between the hardware guys and the software/services guys. Their engineering division had to do battle with the movies and music divisions. Things got so out of hand that, in one lawsuit a couple of years ago, it was SONY vs. SONY. Ridiculous. Hopefully, upper management has now realized that the software guys are on the losing end of this. Hopefully...
