I jumped in late so someone else can pick up what I missed.

The 40GB PS3 will get a HDD swap and become the 80GB PS3 at $400. It will have all the features of the 40GB...which means no backwards compatibility.

New video download service will be available TONIGHT. Pretty much the same as the Xbox Live Videomarketplace service. Price structure is similar. You can buy movies though and transfer them to your PSP either through the PS3 via USB or through your PC via USB and the Playstation store.

PSP Entertainment Pack featuring Ratchet & Clank coming for $199.
Resistance game for PSP looking very good for a handheld game.

Sony announced a MMOFPS called MAG that will support 256 players with a command structure. The better players can be the commanders. CGI Trailer shown. No word on when it is coming out.

God of War III announced. CGI Trailer shown. No word on when it is coming out.

Gran Turismo TV announced. PPV through Gran Turismo: Prologue to watch racing related shows and event like Top Gear. I don't get this when they have the PSN Video service...

They also showed off a MMORPG - DC Universe created by Jim Lee. Fight alongside or against your favorite DC characters. No release window.

Video Service

Sony's hooked up with Warner, Fox, Lion's Gate, Disney, MGM and others to bring video rental to the PS3. Video is set to be fully integrated into the PlayStation Store, said Sony's Jack Tretton at the company's E3 press event.

A video button in the PlayStation Store will have separate categories for TV and film to choose from, and movies can also be listed by studio. The Eye and Reservoir Dogs were seen in the store during the demonstration, though currently 85 are available for rental in standard definition.

According to PSN's Eric Lempel, it takes about an hour to download one of the rented films. Price points vary too - $15 to purchase, $6 to rent in HD, and $4 to rent in SD.

The AVC-format videos downloaded to PS3 can also be transferred to the PSP via a USB cable.

The service launches tonight!

Ratchet & Clank: Future Booty for PSN

At Sony's E3 press conference, Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest For Booty was announced for the PlayStation network, picking up where Ratchet and Clank Future left off. The idea is to offer a shorter game for a lower price, said Sony's Jack Tretton.

Essentially, it looks to be a new quest pack for R&C Future, featuring "light and dark gameplay," and will go for $15 this summer.

Little Big Planet slips from September to October

God of War III

Kratos is going to kick some Ancient Greek ass on the PS3. Sony just showed a CGI trailer confirming that one of the best action series ever made is coming to their next-generation console. God of War 3 will be released sometime "after this holiday season," so don't expect it until at least next year. But Sony has confirmed that PS3 owners will be getting a visit from everybody's favorite godkiller.

Resistance: Retribution - Third person shooter for the PSP

At their E3 press conference today, Sony announced Resistance: Retribution, a new third-person shooter in the popular first-person Resistance series for the PSP, coming in Spring 2009. The game is being produced by Bend Studio, the people behind Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. More as we hear it.

More on the new 80GB PS3

A $399 model of the PlayStation 3 equipped with an 80GB hard drive will replace the current $399 40GB model in September, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton announced today.

Currently, the 80GB PlayStation 3 is bundled with a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 for $499.

The new 80GB model will have "the same functionality as the 40GB," Tretton claimed.

You didn't miss much. Hardly anything was announced and no solid release date besides the video service was given.

That was pretty much on par with how terrible Nintendo's conference was.

Not really. I think its a tie between MS and Sony. MS because it has FFXIII, and Sony because I think it actually had the most amount of good games shown..

Excited for the video service! I'll have to test out how long it takes to download an HD movie.

Yeah, I had to stifle a laugh when Tretton said something to the effect that "We will be releasing a new 80GB PS3 with all the same features as the 40GB!" What? You cut stuff out of the 40GB to make it cheaper!

Wait, they're not getting rid of the 80 GB version that has a game + PS2 BC, right? My first assumption was that they would have two concurrent 80 GB models, but after re-reading what you wrote I can't tell if they're keeping the current 80 GB model. If they're keeping the current 80 GB, they ought to at least bump it up to 100 GB to avoid SOME confusion.

I don't know what the exact plan is with the current 80GB. I imagine they'll sell the MGS4 bundle, let it clear out and introduce the new 80GB.

Sony showed stuff we knew about for the most part. The video service was new, as were a couple of other things. Their finale game was weak as hell. Sounds like a Planetside ripoff, because Planetside worked so well... Granted I only had Kotaku's live blog to go off of, so definitely correct me about it if I'm wrong.

The PS3 is seriously at least a year behind of where it should be - in games, features, and price. I really wanted this conference to "wow me" and it just fell flat.

2008 is not the year of the PS3. 2009 looks promising, however (though I said the same thing for E3 07).

I have a hunch they're phasing out BC altogether to make way for their PS2/PSX download service. Or maybe I'm wrong and they just don't want to invest money into the resources required to get games functional with software emulation. Or maybe it's because the PS2 is STILL selling (and they're still making games for it).

Either way, I am continually trying to talk myself into getting one, but the whole "the best has yet to come" approach Sony has taken these past 2 years has gotten stale, especially when it never comes. And now they don't even have the FFXIII leg to stand on. I really hope Little Big Planet is insanely awesome.

The video service has been also known about for a while, but the partners have not been... and its cool that they're launching it tonight. As for MAG, yeah... from what I could tell, that was all CG and no gameplay. Idea sounds alright, but Resistance 2 is already doing huge ass battles, breaking it up into squads of people. Not sure why this super revolutionary.

As for God of War 3, I'm pretty sure everyone knew that was coming even if it wasn't official.

I loved what they did with the numbers and using LBP to demo them. It really did make it more interesting and cute. Much like Spore however, I still dont know how LBP is going to be made into an engrossing game.

I was kind of hoping I'd see something from Sony that would blow me away so I could have an easy go-to-gift-for-myself this holiday, but it didn't. The price drop is nice, but its still $400 that I wouldn't have to pay for if I just kept gaming on the 360.

I think it's an excellent value at the current price if you want everything it has to offer... it just isn't a 2 year old video game system price. Blu-ray is what makes it worth the price.

PS3 Wrapup? Swift kick to the balls for Sony. Losing Final Fantasy XIII is HUGEEEEEEEEEEE. They should thank their lucky stars for GOW3.

that trailer for GoW3 looked like one of the Celtics intro videos in the Playoffs this year, and Kratos looked like Garnett.

I agree - it's a great "value" for a Blu-ray player.

Thing is, Blu-ray is still in its infancy, and so you're paying an unnecessary early-adoption fee to get what should ultimately be a gaming machine.

I've always been fond of it as a media center - Sony is and always has been great with that stuff (ignore Betamax and UMDs) - but they dropped the ball as a powerful gaming successor to the PS2.

Sadly, this sounds like Sony. No more PS2 BC, when there are scores of good PS2 games that will never be re-made for the PS3.

If the low-end PS3 supported PS2 BC they could also be selling ISOs like MS is starting to do for xbox1, at almost zero cost. They pocket the free money while keeping classic games available. But noooo. :|

The thing that got me is how many games they are STILL making for the PS2. Geez 8 years and still going strong.

PS2 owns. One of my most antiicipated games is out for it later this year. Persona 4.

So basically a bunch of pre-rendered videos of games and a bunch of absent release dates? Meh. I don't think anyone expected much, if any information on GoW3. It almost seems like they showed it out of need rather than want.
