This thing works great for the new PS2 Slim model. You don't need to install the software on the memory card, or stick the "eye" into the controller port.

Great find!

CocoGdog - are you talking about the model with receiver or the one without? AFAIK the model WITH receiver (this one) doesn't work with the built-in receivers for the newer PS2s.

Still a good deal though. :)

ok.. so how do I figure out if this remote will work with my son's (3yo) PS2? I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to console systems and the customer reviews just confused me further.

I'm using this on a recently purchased PS2 Slim & it works flawlessly.

According to the instructions on the back

This DVD remote control (SCPH-10420 U) is not compatibile with some Playstation2 system.

If you own one of the model numbers listed below, use the SCPH-10171 DVD remote control)

SCPH-30001, SCPH-35001 GT, SCPH-39001 R, SCPH-39001, SCPH-39001/N SCPH-39010/N

To identify the model number of your system refer to the label on the system rear or left side panel.

thanks, uwannawhat (hehe.. that's a great name :) )

I'll check tomorrow when he isn't here to catch me, to see if it will work with his ps2. I've thought a little more and am not sure he actually needs this.. I was thinking it would be handy when he goes away to school but I recall now that the first year or so my daughter preferred to watch dvd's on her computer because her monitor had a larger screen than her tv :p.

still, he has mentioned the nuisance now and then of not having one and 7.50 is good stocking stuffer price.. I'm sure he'd like to have one, whether he actually needs it or not!

I have the new slim PS2 (brought it on Anandtech). I have the PS2 remote, made by Sony. I use it to watch a movie yesterday. It was as good as gold. I don't know if there are two variants of the "Slim PS2," just that mine has a IR receiver built-in.

Hmm. now that is strange.

The one I got & posted the info off of the back of the box didn't come with a reciever just the remote.

I wonder if this is newer stock? They may be trying to clear out the old ones & got confused?

that is it. they are trying to get rid of the older ones, plus maybe sony didn't change the upc codes?
30001 series = controller port remote type
50001 series = ir port remote type
