sony dsc w5 driver issues

hi all,

i just built a wxp box for a friend to replace his old win98 system and i'm having trouble getting his digital camera installed...

its a cybershot dsc-w5 and it worked fine on win98 but neither the driver on the install cd nor the latest from the sony website seem to work... xp recognizes it as a "Sony DSC" device but doesn't accept any of the official sony drivers and simply won't install...

with my limited digital camera experience all i've had to do is connect and wxp recognizes the camera immediately and you can browse it like a removable drive without having to install anything...

can anybody point me in the right direction here? i'm pretty lost.... thanks!

Not sure what the problem is. Are you sure you need the drivers at all? Usually you don't. I haven't had to after using 6 different cameras from Kodak (some crappy one), Canon(S2, A85, SD400), and Sony (Alpha and some 1.3 MP POS). You may also get better answers in one of the Software forums.

if you can browse and copy/move the pics, all is well, relax dude 😉

EDIT: oh, i didn't read your post correctly 😱

Does other stuff work fine on that USB port?

in my experience i've also never had to install drivers but this camera is a few years old and it simply doesn't work

in the device manager it shows up as a yellow question mark "SONY DSC" and requires drivers 🙁

the problem is that neither the drivers that shipped with it nor the latest drivers from the sony website work...
the camera worked fine on Win98SE right before i formatted

i did some research and it could be a memory card issue... anyway this is a longshot i was just hoping someone had a similar experience and could help!

Does the camera still work on other computers?

That would rule out the problem being the camera, if it does....
