Sony DSC P71 3MP digital camera (warm to hot)

First of all, the crackheads at f@twallet don't know what they're talking about when they make up deals for the Sony DSC P71. Secondly, please flame me if this deal sucks because I hate 1st time deal posters who cowardly beg "please don't flame me!" FYI this is my second hot deals post.

First, the warm deal: Staples Item # 483066. PM to Dell Home & Home Office: 349.95 - 40 = 309.95

At this point, you're are the cheapest commercially available price (see epinions link below). If you buy today (1/16/03), Dell has a stackable $10 code (see the technology bargain site). $299.95, but I didn't push my luck with this since I took the step described below.

Now, here's the YMMV part: add the Staples 50 off 300 coupon (search the usual sites).

Hot Deal Total = 259.95 + tax

Here's an even hotter deal: Use your Sony Citibank credit card. Don't have one?

Sign up here: Sony Citibank Card

They'll give you a 2000 point bonus, which is worth $20. You'll get 780 points ($7.80) for purchasing the SONY camera on the Sony Citibank Card.

Redeem the above Sony bonus points ($27.80) for the camera purchase.

Grand total = $232.15 (with some work) + tax <- - - - - - - my final price 😀

Some notes about the camera:

My requirements for a camera were: 3 MP, AA batteries, and a hot deal! The Sony P71 has all that.
* 3x optical zoom (2x digital)
* Non reflective LCD screen coating.
* Its movie mode is limited only by the space on the memory card.
* Bells and whistles (creates animated GIFs, artistic filters)
* Pocketable (the Canon A40 is way too big).
* Uses AA NiMH batteries.
* Comes with NiMH batteries and charger!
* Charger is *slow*.
* No sound with movie mode.
* Dinky 16 MB memory stick.
* Memory stick does not taste as good as a pack of Juicy Fruit.

Major differences between P71 and P7 ($50 more)
* P7 has sound with movies
* INFOLithium batteries (but proprietary and expensive)
* P7 is smaller
* P7 can output lossless TIFF files

This is a nice, compact 3MP digital camera... good luck!

Some tips on using the PM and the coupon simultaneously:
1. I succeeded when I called in the order. I used my Staples Business Rewards.
2. Add a second item after you PM.
3. Then add the coupon.
4. If you phone in the order, be talkative! Remember (and use) the name of the CSR of the opposite sex.

there are people that use movie mode reguarly? i always think of movie mode as some kind of evolutionary relic from older generation digital camera's. if you want movies, get a camcorder!

Actually, I wanna buy a 4GB micro drive and actually record full length movies at digital quality on a camera. Would that work? Some cameras put a 45 second limit. I need to check this out. Using a Digital Camera as a camcorder would be truly useful...I just need to find one that takes 30 frames a second (1800 frames a minute)

unfortunately most digital cameras if they shoot, shoot at pretty poor quality (nowhhere near camcorder quality) and like you said, don't shoot at high frame rates...i think the p71 shoots 12 fps and i think the dsc-s85 shoots at 15 or something...digital cameras just aren't made to shoot movies

I know some that do 30 fps.

No, I disagree, most do movies above 800x600, which is better than TV quality.

No, I disagee!! I own the Sony DSC-F707 (list is $1,000) and it doesn't do anything close to 800 x 600!!

Firs thing you need to understand about business is you never cannibalize your own products. In layman's terms Sony isn't about to sell a digicam that does movies as good as it's camcorder line and they also won't manufacture a camcorder that takes killer stills - just won't happen.

Please tell me what camera does an 800 x 600 movie mode?? Obviously something with a big IBM microdrive!!

To the same point - don't base your digital camera purchase on how it does movies, that would be like biying a car based on it's ability to ford deep rivers - get a boat.

Let the flames begin, but to these guns I will stand!

i doubt it... miniDV cams record at 720x480, and those are dedicated ~30fps camcorders.

Deal back on. Again, YMMV.

Best results if you have a Business Rewards Card.

1. Tell the CSR to PM item with Dell
2. Add Targus Digital Camera Bag Item No. 491150 (bag is a good fit for this camera)
3. Tell them you got a coupon with your quarterly Staples Business Rewards mailing and you would like to use it.

Score! Bam!

Camera kicks major bootie! My review to come later if ATers want.
