Sony DRU-800a won't read CDs

My sister has a Sony DRU-800a dual layer burner that writes and reads DVDs without any problems, but it will NOT read or write CDs. I've tried blank CDs, burned CDs, and even retail CDs but the drive just won't read any of them.

I was going to update the firmware, but the Sony utility told me that the firmware was all ready the most recent available.

She is running Windows XP Pro and has a ECS K7S5A motherboard.

Any ideas what might be causing this? Could one of the lasers be bad?
