I have had my Sony DRU-710A external for like 6 months. About 3 months of it were great. Then it stopped. First it would only read discs like half the time and mostly even when it did, the burns were messed up (ie would not play dvd backups in my dvd player).
Now the drive will not read anything at all. It makes weird sounds that no CD/DVD drive should ever make. I did not abuse it or anything like that, it literally just starting failing form one disc to the next.
The sound sort of sounds like the disc skittering inside or something. It is like it tries to spin it up and fails to do so. It does this over and over and over and over...
It can still read CDs and DVDs. It also can write CDs, although most of the time the burns cannot be read back :/ I have upgraded to the latest firmware, with no luck. The only media I have found that makes the awful sounds is a blank DVD. Other media appears to not make this sound and function normal (except burning CDs that don't come out). I just made a successful CD at 8x burn speed, but the faster speeds fail alot, and to get the 8x one I had to try twice.
What the heck is wrong with my drive? What can I do? Why did it do this? I emailed Sony tech support and, of course, they haven't gotten back to me. I don't have my original receipt, so even though I am within my warranty of 1 year, I suspect they will not let me get the drive repaired? Can anyone please help?
EDIT: It actually makes the sound a few times then stops. When it stops, the computer thinks there is no disc in the drive.
