OMG, its finally here:Q It would go great with my new comp but I am saving up for the summer :( Hopefully it will be cheaper by the end of summer. Also why the big difference between the LiteOn and the Sony? By looks of specs both are very similar and the engine is upplied by LiteOn.

CHEAPER AT BUY.COM

Buy.com link

They have it for $198.99. Not in stock anywhere or shipping yet.

According to Verbatim, the first to offer DVD+R DL discs, the media won't be widely available (read "spindles") until 4 to 5 months after the drives are on the shelves. Given the premium you'll have to pay, probably be a good idea to wait those months and then purchase a drive when you can get affordable media spindles (not to mention some certain software apps *cough, cough* DVDShrink *cough, cough* add support for the new drives / media.

One nice thing....the Sony drive ships with the Nero software package. That might account for some of the price difference between the lite-on and Sony drives.

Looks like everything I'm seeing suggests it won't be on the shelves (shipped) till June. Ordering now is kind of a waste as MSRP is $230 on that Sony.

Well, they're saying that when the drives are on the shelf, there will be media. It's just not being manufactured in enough quantity to sell in SPINDLES (bulk), meaning more expensive 10, 5, and 3 pack will be what is available for many months after introduction.

now that the dual layers are out, I might be able to actually buy a dvd burner.

pretty soon the 2X and 4X drives will be on sale after rebates for like 19.99 and 29.99 like cdrw drives are. then I might buy one!

They already are. I picked up a 4x for $37.50 after $20 rebate. Someone PM'ed an 8x and walked out with one for $36 AR.

CDW does say shipping in 4-6 days... we'll see.

I've been waiting for these dual-layers for a while, so I'm psyched. Finally a big enough jump in single-sided capacity to start archiving old work on these.

Some people are floating $20 to $50 per disc, which is nuts.

Sony themselves said the price would probably by $2-$5 per disc. For the first 6 months, I'd bet on $4-$5 myself, eventually next year falling down to the $2 range on spindles.

Another new generation of drives. I think with this, we'll finally see every computer standard with at least 2x DVD burners instead of CDRW's. Its all finally quite affordable!

I'm sure I'll be a sucker and buy dual-layer as soon as the media shows up...

It's the standard Nero 6 OEM suite with NeroExpress.

btw.. Sony has dropped the suggested retail price of the DRU-700A down to $199.99. I wouldn't pay any more than that.

You can preorder it through Sony for $199.99

Yeah, in Anadtech review, the dual layer tests came up with error. But to Sony's defense, Anandtech didn't know if those were actually errors or just the software not reporting right on DL media. Anyway, I think I'll be picking up Plextor's 12X single layer DVD burner on May 11th and wait for the DL burners to mature a little more. I'm going to be using my burner for backups so I want as accurate of a burn as I possibly can get.
