Sony Digital Camera Has Issues

I purchased a DSC-S40 as a gift for Christmas. Along with that I also purchased a SanDisk Memory Stick Pro 256MB. For two months it worked fine. Then, a few weeks ago, each and every time the camera was powered on I have received an error message which says, "Memory Stick Error" across the center of the LCD screen in the back of the camera. Along with this message is a flashing memory stick icon in the upper right hand corner and the code "C:13:01"
My first assumption was the memory stick is just acting funky and to try and format it. But the camera won't allow me to do so. When I go to the menu and try, I receive that same error message.
Next, I assumed I had a bad Memory Stick. I pulled it out of the camera to see if the camera would work using its own internal memory. It did just fine, so I concluded the Memory Stick Pro was bad and contacted SanDisk. Seeing as it is only two months old and under warranty they quickly replaced it. Well, the new one arrived today and, lo and behold, that same error message is back! I'm stumped. The likelihood of two bad memory sticks is slim, so I have to assume it's the camera.
Any ideas? Thank you.

Buy a sony stick and try that instead. Sometimes sony products only work with their sony memory... sometimes.

I understand that Sony cameras might prefer Sony sticks, but the SanDisk did work perfectly fine for around two or three months. Puzzling.
In the meantime, I'll try cleaning the contacts and see if that makes a difference.

At this point in time anyone who still buys Sony products deserves whatever problems they encounter. There couldn't possibly be more warning signs

Oh, anyway, to answer your question.... I prefer a ball peen hammer when repairing cameras.
That's what I need to know! Thanks. 😉

BTW, cleaning the contacts didn't make a difference. Still not working.

I find that unreal. That is the same error that Sony's defective DVD players have. I had that error on my $600 Sony DVD player as well as my brother. Sony must love C13 errors or something.

Hehe. . .read some of those reviews on the Sony DVD's. Wow! Some really unhappy customers, to say the least.
As for my camera, I contacted Sony via email. They sent a generic reply which boiled down to them telling me the problem is my using a third party manufacturer's memory stick, rather than a Sony:

We're sorry the difficulties you're experiencing with the Sony DSC-S40 Digital camera. Based on the information you have provided, we suggest that you follow the steps given below to troubleshoot the issue:

- Make sure that you have inserted the Memory Stick properly and securely.

- Try using a different Sony Memory Stick and check the operation.

- Initialize the camera and check the operation. Please refer to page 49 of the instruction manual for more information.

We can only recommend that you use the Sony branded accessories that have been designed for this product. We can neither recommend or endorse any third-party products. To use any other products may cause unforeseen complications or damage and could negatively affect the product's performance. Damage caused by the use of any third-party products is not covered under your warranty.

NOTE: Should you choose to purchase third-party hardware for use with your Sony product, please be advised that we are unable to assist with any support of non-Sony hardware. The manufacturer of third-party hardware should be contacted for any and all assistance.

NOTE: Sony does not and cannot make any warranty or representation with respect to the performance, suitability or compatibility of any product manufactured by third parties. Sony hereby disclaims any representation or warranty that products manufactured by other manufacturers are compatible with any combination of Sony and/or non-Sony products. Third-party manufacturers and their resellers are NOT authorized by Sony to vary or waive this disclaimer.

I'm going to contact SanDisk once again to see if they can offer any suggestions. Once they tell me their product is not at fault, :frown:, I'll spring for a Sony stick and hope that settles it.

Although I hate Sony. They might have a point. I bought a 1GB Sandisk Memory Stick Duo for my PSP and it doesn't work. The card reader works with it but my PSP doesn't.

You should read the reviews for the 330, 550, etc. They are all the same. That whole entire lineup of DVD players, which was probably 2 years worth is defective, yet Sony does not admit there is anything wrong and won't support their products.

Yeah, it's the Sony camera that's not working for the Sandisk, NOT the Sandisk that's not working for the Sony. Sandisk is one of the best memory makers out there and they stand by their products. Fvck Sony.

At this point I'm gonna say that the contacts in the Sony camera are the ones that need cleaning, not the contacts on the Sandisk. Memory stick is a sh!tty format anyway. Whoever thought up memory stick needs to be FUTA with a cactus then dragged into the street and shot repeatedly with an acid gun.

I was going to purchase a sony digital camera this weekend but after reading this thread I think I've changed my mind.

Surprised no one has suggested this yet...

<--- Uses 2 different SanDisk Memory Stick Pros (one normal, one Duo/ultra II) in his Sony DSC-V1, *knock on wood*

I've used Lexar memory sticks in various Sony devices, and have never had any issues, whereas I've seen other brands cause issues for no apparent reason.

Also, I've used Sandisk and "generic" Compact Flash cards in a Sony DSC-F828 without problems, for well over a year.

We're sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing with the Sony DSC-S40 Digital camera. But you're basically screwed. Good luck!

Fixed.

Power it up without any memory stick. It should read the internal memory. If that works, take the batteries out, and leave 'em out for a while. Charge some up to full charge while you're waiting, or try a fresh set of alkalies. You could get that error from anything like the camera getting wet, to being dropped or anything in between. Not likely anything to do with what brand of memory stick. The thing is to try and clear the camera's memory somehow.

Speaking of memory. The memory stick format uses 10 sturdy connection points, like a PC card, not 50 fragile pins. You can read directly from the memory stick in the camera as quickly as from a card reader. Try that with CF!

I also notice Sony isn't plagued by fragile doors and sticking lens covers, but that's no big deal, right?

That error has something to do with bad formatting on the media, hence why they use it across platforms. In theory it's supposed to tell you that there's a problem on the memory stick, and you need to format it. In practice, it means that the camera is no longer able to read memory sticks properly, and you need to chuck it against the wall and go buy a Canon.
