Seems like a mispriced item to me....good luck to those willing to try.

I wish I had the money...I'd try it myself.

B&H is a reputable company. I've ordered from them in the past. They are also an authorized Sony retailer.

As I placed my order yesterday, I asked the sales rep why they were priced so much lower than their competition and he replied that they just recently lowered the price to get rid of them.

I've been looking for a digital camcorder for a while now and this is the best deal I've seen, plus the price gives me an opportunity to own a MicroMV camcorder....with bluetooth!

$50 rebate is good in conjuction with a printer purchase.

btw, shipping was cheap...i believe under $10.

also, their microMV tapes and 4-year warranties are cheap too.

Nice! If I *was* looking for a camcorder, this would be the one.

Between my father and I we've ordered from B&H at least a dozen times, as recently as just last week. Always had 100% excellent service, I would totally trust them to deliver.

microMV is much harder to work with than miniDV. unless there were new developments (drivers, software, etc) that i'm not aware of, you'll go though hell and back trying to convert the clips into a workable format. several forum searches earlier involved either the installation/purchase of quicktime pro (yielded off-sync audio), or a slew of other workarounds.

if anybody knows any good way to easily work with microMV clips, please do let me know!

and you'd think (like i did) that would make it easy, etc. trouble is, when i was working it it about 4 months ago, it became near impossible to 1) transfer the DV clips onto your PC without using the proprietary (inferior) software that sony bundles with the camcorder, and 2) convert the extracted (mms i think) clips into something that third-party software such as TMPGEnc, VirtualDub, or even FlaskMPEG can work with.

So can anyone give any feedback on this camera? My wife keeps nagging for one and this might be a GREAT deal right?

Avoid amphoto like the plague...

Their prices are a scam. I ordered from the once but they claimed the product was for non-US warranty and wanted me to fork over extra $$$... I just laughed and canceled the order.

Stay far away from the Micro MV cameras. The footage can't be edited with normal NLE's you have to get special sony software to edit, and it isn't that great. Sony has completely discontinued support for these cameras as well. I wouldn't spend $10 for one of those.

1. Why did these camcorder's cost $1,500 (and still do at some places) in other words why are they three times (!) the price of decent MiniDVs.

2. What is the quality/cost of media when compared to MiniDVs.

3. Please tell us more on why "microMV is much harder to work with than MiniDV", is this true when high end software is concerned as well?

You mean you can't simply just connect it to PC--transfer in real time--convert it--burn it to a DVD disc? If yes, how long does it take to accomplish this for say, 1 hour of footage and what's the quality like when compared to MiniDVs and DVD camcorders?

I'd like to hear more on why we should stay away from this deal, please expand your comments if you already posted not recommending it.

Well I did a quick search for this model and I'm going to pass.
The review was for DCR-IP5. I don't know how different the DCR-IP55 is but I got the idea of what this camcorder is about and why it was so expensive:

"Although the camcorder uses Firewire, it's not compatible with existing Firewire. The camcorder can connect to computers using existing Firewire ports, but only Sony's Movieshaker software can recognize the software. Existing video capture programs are not able to record the special MicroMV Firewire. The MicroMV format records MPEG-2 video, and can hold one hour of video.

The DCR-IP5 is small, small enough to fit in your pocket. The camcorder is designed more for the casual user who is not interested in shooting quality video. The camcorder is so small its hard to shoot stable video with it, and it feels awkward on a tripod.

The camcorder seems more than a gadget than a true "memory recording device". I wouldn't recommend this camcorder with such a high price tag of $1,299 unless you need an ultra small camcorder for some specific reason, like spying. Chances are if you need a camcorder this small, you're going to be using it for some super shady activity that you shouldn't be doing in the first..."

:) :) :)

Lots of people followed this review with comments of how much they loved the camera, sample comment:

"I am starting to wonder if you have any idea what the heck you are talking about. The picture quality form this cam is indistiguishable from a minidv. You are the only professional reviewer to say that it is noticably worse. Do us all a favor and lay off the drugs. " :p

I'm going to pass.

It's in the post right above yours, where it says:
"Although the camcorder uses Firewire, it's not compatible with existing Firewire. The camcorder can connect to computers using existing Firewire ports, but only Sony's Movieshaker software can recognize the software. Existing video capture programs are not able to record the special MicroMV Firewire...."
