the 50 or the 30? (price you gave was for the thirty, right?)
either of them are good cameras, just that stingygrrl called it right, they are proprietary and you can only use them with sony products afaik
that's why i chose the canon
do a forum search for sony, cybershot, etc. to get an idea of the recent deals regarding the 30
good luck

well you have to look at both sides of the picture - i love the memory stick because both my laptops have memory stick drives, and my camcorder uses the same media....i don't have to buy media for all of them....

Hi,
I was thinking about the memory stick issue too. I settled on the DSC-P1, the more high end of the mini-cybershots. Yeah, memory sticks suck cause only SOny uses it whereas compact flash is universal. But on the other end, its not the same as beta. Beta died because the movie studios released it on VHS only. Sony is a big company, there here for the long haul so you know they will be usualable for a good long time.

A better comparison to the memory stick would be video game consoles, you can only play playstation, dreamcast, nintendo, on each respective system only but no one complains. whereas computer games are universal to every computer.

They cut a few corners to lower the price on the camera. $299.99 is the retail price - nothing special.

The Sony InfoLithium S battery and charger/AC Adapter are not included with the camera unlike the previous Cybershot models that gave you battery and power adapters in the box. Out of the box, you use two AA batteries.

The movie mode also has no audio but instead of putting a time limitation, this new series features MPEG MovieEX which lets you record to the capacity of your memory stick.

Yes I wish it came with the battery and the battery pack, which cost around $50 and $105 each! I suppose just using a NIMH with charger will due?

Let me guess....all your equipment is Sony?

If you buy a digital camera from another manufacturer and buy a $20 compact flash reader, I could say the same thing. Sony is the only manufacturer using "their" standard. The memory is twice as expensive as CF and harder to find (especially in larger capacities). I give it another year before it's obsolete.

Most of my equipment isn't Sony just because it's Sony - most of my equipment is Sony because the quality of their products. I have to admit, the idea of a 4gb cf microdrive is quite enticing however...

I think that your statement about MS being obsolete in a year is drawn from an extremely narrowminded perspective. Sony computing sales and camera sales are quite strong, not to mention almost every one of their mp3 players use memory stick.

EDIT: forgot to mention, Sony Rocks

Beta rocked too. Any way you look at it a proprietary product (sony memory stick) versus a standardized product (compact flash) is going to loose unless the proprietary product is priced artificially low (which it isn't at 2x the cost of compact flash). Compact flash will win...
