long time reader, first time poster...take it easy on me :)

if anyone's in the same boat as i am, looking for a kick ass digicam at a reasonable price, might wanna check this out:

http://regencycamera.com/sondsdigcam1.html

(Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S70 3.3 Megapix - $599.99)

the cheapest listing on cnet.com is $629 before tax + shipping. at regencycamera, it comes out to $629.99 total for ground shipping to chicago (no tax here). there's also a place to put a coupon code, but i don't know any. not bad at all, considering all the goodies this cam has (including the kick ass carl zeiss lens).

review of the cam:

anyways, i'd be glad to hear your feedback, regarding any better prices, or better deals on other digicams. i'm leaning heavily towards picking up one of these cams, but i can be persuaded differently if a better deal appears. :)

Three other reviews for you from www.reviewfinder.com

My personal gripe about this camera is the "lag" That is, how long it takes to take a photo. This includes power-up/down, zoom, record time, shutter delay, auto-focus....the s70 is pretty bad on this aparently.

Here's a summary from one of the detailed reviews:

Conclusion - Pros
Sharp, high resolution and vividly coloured images
High quality Carl Zeiss designed lens
Very little chromatic abberations (thanks to the lens)
Good selection of program modes: Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Night, Spot etc.
Excellent InfoLithium battery pack & in-camera charging
Camera settings stored between power-ups (even without the battery...)
No need for additional AC adapter
Surprisingly good internal flash
Fairly good Macro ability
USB connectivity
Audio with movie recording & Voice recording

Conclusion - Cons
Slow, both in start up but more importantly focusing, lag and between shots
Inaccurate live LCD preview (only ~90% view)
Some Barrel distortion at wide angles
Aperture priority mode crippled by minimum 1/30s shutter speed
Less manual features / flexibility than the competition
Lack of "in between" JPEG modes (something around 800KB)
Lack of White Balance modes / poor "HOLD" White Balance
Not enough controls on the outside of the camera (exposure compensation??)
Sometimes fiddly menu system
Ergonimically the hand grip could have been better designed
Pitiful 8MB Memory Stick as supplied storage
Colours won't be to everyones tastes
Some people may find Memory Stick limiting

actually, i just found out that the sony dsc-s70 i listed can only take 15 seconds of video with soudn, at 320 resolution. that's kinda weak. the previous cam i had was the leica digilux 4.3 (ie. the fuji finepix 4700) and that can take 80 seconds! i don't understand why these companies don't just make it limited by how much memory you have.

anyways, the canon g-1 is another solid 3.3 mp cam, and it can do 30 seconds of video with sound.

anyone know better deals/cams that can hold more lengthy clips of video with sound?

probably can only handle 15 seconds due to limited internal memory buffer and slow recording process.....
