Sony CRX195E1 40x12x48 just write max 12x!

Hi all,
I've just bought a CDW Sonny 40x12x48. The box says it is Sony CRX195A1, however Windows XP regconizes it as CRX195E1. It should be able to write 40x maximum, however, Nero 5.5.9.9 says it can write 12x max. What is the problem with it?
I have been trying all day to find solution, it's firmware is ZYS2 (newest). Please help!
Regards,

The E1 and A1 are very similar models. I think they are both rebadged Lite-On LTR40125S drives.

It probably depends on the brand of CDRs you put in...

I have the LiteOn 40x12x48 drive, and with some CDRs I can write 40x, while others I can only write at maximum 20x or something...

I would also check to see if Nero has any kind of update for this CDRW drive.

I just bought this drive as well and mine is recognized by Win2K as a Sony CRX195E1 but with f/w revision: SYS5 versus your SYS2. I noticed that under WinOnCD PE 3.7 that the drive is recognized as a 16x burner and it took 4 minutes 26 seconds to burn a complete audio CD so under WinOnCD it's definitely not burning at/near 40x. I'll need a driver update for WinOnCD to recognize this drive correctly. But with Padus Diskjuggler v4.0 and the enclosed B's Recorder Gold, it's burning much faster (3 minutes flat for the same CD; I'm using Taiyo Yuden 24x rated media however)...I need to get some 40x/greater media...

Thanks guys,
Strange enough, when i put a 24x max CD in, Nero now says my burner can burn 40x max. But then I put a 12x CD in, nero jumps down to 12x write max. I guess I should you 24x CD and above from now.
Again, thank you so much.
Have a nice weekend!

Usually, some CDR/RW (especially CD-RW's) have their rated speeds encoded and the burner just reads off it and adjusts the speeds accordingly. I suspect that the 12x media you put in is actually a CD-RW which is rated up to 12x. Try using a CD-RW rated at 4x and the burner would only burn at that speed.
