Sony confirms In-Game XMB access

Sony?s gaming division might have a small showing at this year?s CES, but that isn?t keep Paul Purdy from dropping some big PS3 news: in-game Xross Media Bar (XMB) access is confirmed for 2008. When pressed for a date or timeframe with more solidarity, the Sony rep countered with a "no further comments" and left us praying that the long-awaited feature will release sooner rather than later.

For those not aware, the PS3?s operating system is unavailable while in games. This prevents the use of custom soundtracks or messenging while a game is active, and since the Xbox 360 offers its users both while in-game, PS3 owners have been justifiably frustrated.

More information to come as it is released.

Woohoo, sometime in '08!

Oh...wait...what?

Well, at least Sony's added a bunch of PS1 titles to the PSN store...oh, wait, what?

Well, BD is winning, so we got that going for us.

Heh, well, at least it IS coming. I personally don't see it as a big deal (I never use the dash in-game on the 360), but I know some are waiting for it.

You never use the friends list in game? 😕

It's not a huge deal to me either at this point, maybe when I actually own a game on the PS3 with online play, but it seems to be another item on a stack of things Sony has announced, indicated a quick release into the wild, and then pushed them back indefinitely. First Home, then LBP, MGS4, now the in-game XMB. Also, you'd think they'd be dumping 2-3 PS1 games onto the PSN store every week, and we barely get anything.

I honestly like my PS3 much more than my 360, but I wish Sony would step it up when it comes to actually bringing functionality to the console. It seems like they start out with these cool, manageable ideas, then over time, they spiral into these huge, elaborate situations that complicate the situation and push the releases back 12-18 months.

I think Home would sell PS3s, it's an amazing idea that they could release as a barebones system like we've seen in videos and then build on that over time. I'm still not sure why we're not seeing it. Home could be the console version of MySpace or Facebook, something XBL can't touch currently, and that people would flock to.

exactly...I've used the freinds list in game all the time...it is one of those features of xbox live that is just so nice and seamless.

We've known for a months that this is coming--is this really news?

Not sure where you heard confirmation, but as far as I know, it was only rumors until now.

I think I used it once, maybe. Heh, maybe it's because all my friends play on PS3...I guess I'm used to organizing things prior to playing, or just getting together with them in Warhawk or Resistance (which would benefit from in-game XMB, now that I think about it, but I'm fine for now).

i swear to god, the ps3 needs to pick up some steam here...
the playing music while in game is one single annoying feature lacking and not being able to read messages is just stupid. I'm sorry but if you have messaging with a game console, how much time do you spend just sitting on that dashboard waiting for a message. you will be playing games on it!!! I use the messaging and mp3 playback while in game on my 360 at least every time its turned on, and honestly...my 360 is on a ton more than my ps3 right now!!!
We will be pushing 2 years past release for these feeatures!
