Sony claims "Liquid Damage to Mobo"

My boss's laptop crapped out a month or so ago. It was always kept on a shelf and never near water. We tried a reformat, no help. Sent it into tech support - they want $800 for "liquid damage" claiming the mobo was fried.

Okay, so it was not liquid damage, but it could be that the mobo is fried, but I mean, I can buy a spare for much less then that right? I don't mind installing it, I have worked on plenty of laptops, but I mean, the mobo is available for sonys right? Anyone know what ODM they are?

tell them to go to hell and tell them to give you the part number and tell them you will never let anyone you know ever buy a sony again..

FWIW.. next laptop you get.. buy a complete care warranty.. Dell only charges $119 to upgrade for the length of your warranty... if you had a 4 year warranty.. they would only charge you $119 total to upgrade it to complete care for the next four years << this was correct just one month ago

Yeah, not my computer, the bosses... just thoght I would ask if anyone knew where to get the parts...

The only place you can get the parts is from Sony. They are anal about it. At least they were when I was a tech at Sh!tUSA. It is possible that a liquid damaged it. I have dealt with many people that claim that they never spilled anything on their laptops only to open it up and have a fluid ooze out of the thing. It happens and people will claim ignorance if it means it will save them a buck or save them face.

Tell your boss to buy a new computer.

I suggest try looking on eBay if you intend to make the repair yourself. Most damaged laptops sold on eBay has a crack on screen. I was able to get quite a few decent parts to repair 4 laptops (1 compaq, 1 acer, 1 sony, and 1 dell) within the last few years.
