Sony CDRW freaking out on me

My roommate's been having a problem with his CD-RW. I believe the model number is CRX175/A1. (Hope this is the right forum-searched for similar problems and found none)

Starting about six months ago, his CDRW would just stop functioning properly. It would eject the tray no matter what you had in there, and the tray would not stay closed. Then, it would fix itself one day. Then later it would not work again.

Soon, other things were going wrong, so I replaced his mobo with an ECS K7S5A (we're poor). Everything was running smoothly for about two months until the CDRW started acting up again. And now it's working again.

Trying to fix it, I've done the following with no luck-

-Reseated all the cables
-switched it from master to slave and back (it's on it's own cable)
-Looked for new drivers (no luck)
-Took it in to a mom and pop store, they didn't know what was wrong
-Uninstalled and reinstalled
-Tried numerous types of disks when it was and wasn't functioning properly

Basically I have reached the limit of my knowledge. I'm just a functional techie, I know enough to get me by. Any suggestions or things you have run into similar? Anyone had this problem with a Sony before?

With the prices dropping rapidly on CDRWs I'm tempted just to replace it, but $50 is alot for us right now in college. This is just a last resort hoping a guardian angel can swoop down and give me a few pointers to have her back up and running.

Any help would be most appreciated, thanks in advance.

(BTW He's running a Duron 700 on Win2k)

Merci, beaucoup. Thought everyone was ignoring me. Dunno how I missed that thread, searched a few times to make sure no one else had the problem. Will try that.

(Sorry about the French. Four hours a day of French class will do that to a person.)
