short background: building system for girlfriend, Abit NF7 mobo, athlon 3200+, 512 megs DDR, maxtor 80gig hd, windows XP PRO SP1.

XP will not initalize the sony CDR/RW i put in this computer, its model number CRX230ED. the peoblem is this; upon booting windows there is no CD drive listed in explorer, device manager, no autorun, even the command prompt cant find it. when i run "add new hardware" it says there are no new devices to add and magically the CDrom appears in all of the previously mentioned places. there are no driver updates for this drive from sony.

any advice techies?

Prior to running device manager, check your windows\setupapi.log file and see if the drive is being detected.

Also, see if your plug and play service is running.

in setupapi.log i find this for the cdrom

#I140 installing device class: "CDROM" {appears to be a memory address, not typing it out lol}.
#I141 Class install completed with no errors.

about halfway down the log i find

#-019 Searching for hardware ID(s): ide\cdromsony_cd-rw_CRX230ed______________________4ys1______,ide\cdromsony_cd-rw_CRX230ed______________________4ys1______,ide\cdromsony_cd-rw_CRX230ed______________________4ys1______,ide\cdromsony_cd-rw_CRX230ed______________________4ys1______,gencdrom
#-018 Searching for compatable ID(s): gencdrom

about 3 lines down there is

#I022 Found "GenCdRom" in C:|windows\inf\cdrom.inf; device: "CD-ROM Drive"; Driver:"CD-ROM Drive"; Provider: "Microsoft"; Mfg: "(Standard CDROM Drives)"; section name: "cdrom_install".
#I023 Actual install section: [cdrom_install]. Rank: 0x0000004. Effective driver date 07/01/01.

there is alot more about the cdrom pretaining to the install of the driver later in the log but im too lazy to type it out and i think i got the important part (where it tries to load the driver 4 times then switches to generic) let me know if you need all of the log

plug n play startup is auomatic and is running upon boot of windows.

any ideas guys? im gonna swap the drive around on my IDE cables and see if that changes anything.
