A good alternative multimedia laptop is the Dell XPS 15 If you get it with the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display upgrade.

It can be had for $849 in the base configuration with the display upgrade.

NOTE: Never buy this laptop if you're not going to get the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display upgrade. The display is literally half the reason the XPS is a good alternative to the Vaio F, with the other half being the audio.

The 1366x768 display in the XPS awful: bad image quality, big text so not very many windows fit onscreen since it's the same resolution as a 12" laptop. The 1920x1080 display is, in some ways, actually better than the Vaio F display (color reproduction).

Also, don't pay extra to get the i7 unless you have a use for it. And certainly never trade the screen for the processor. The screen affects everything you do.

- All models except the $1299 model come with the 1366x768 display. You need to upgrade this to the 1920x1080 B+RGLED display.
- The backlit keyboard is a worthwhile upgrade.
- Try your configuration on all the base models to see which one is the best deal.
- Apply coupon code 932N$0ZCCHWZB9

That XPS15 is nice. But with the top line I7 CPU, the best display and keyboard, 8GB RAM, 750GB drive and Blu-Ray reader / writer and only Office 2010 starter, with Win 7 64 bit Ultimate it comes to $2099 .. coupon drops it to $1999

If the computer is for general usage, performance upgrades are not needed. However the 1920x1080 screen upgrade is required in any case so it comes first anyway.

Thanks for all responses.
I decided to wait for Christmas sell.
I am bit out of luck this time.
My AT&T atrix lapdock order also got cancelled for reason unknown.
I will purchase in Christmas season.

What you think about MacBook running windows 7 through bootcamp?

Both the places ( Sony and AT&T ) charged my credit card and now its all pending for cancellation email.
Dont know what is going wrong.

Check the Dell Outlet store. I've never bought a new Dell laptop for myself and have had no problems.

Guys which one tpnchoose between dell latitude 6420 or MacBook pro 13 inch.
Which is more reliable and how is windows 7 performance on MacBook?
My sis who is student, will help me with purchase.

@docb: you seem to be on a run of bad luck. The MBP runs fine running Windows 7 using Bootcamp ($100 software) and $999 on the previous refresh of the MBP13 is ok, only $200 less than when new. You should probably avoid the Mac unless you want to run it in its native OSX,which some people swear by and some, well, don't (I am in the latter camp!) Between now and when the Ivy Bridge laptops begin shipping in March-June there will be some sensational deals on the current models of Sandy Bridge cpu laptops, so if you are not in a hurry, I would monitor the deal sites and find one ideal for you. $1,000 or so will get you many very fine Windows laptops over the next several months (including now). If you are considering a Sony F, Appple MBP13, a Dell XPS 15 and a Dell Latitude 6420, you have insufficiently determined just what you want in a laptop. (If nothing else, screen size among these varies from 13-16.4 and weight from 5 lbs to 9 lbs!) All of the above are good products in their own rights, but they are very different from one and other. In terms of sheer bang for the $, the Sony F was probably the best deal you mentioned (tho only if it had the FHD screen) and the XPS 15 next. The Latitude 6420 is an excellent product, but it is the only "business class" product you selected - more durable, matte finish screen, different graphics card, better support, normally more expensive than all the others unless you get a great deal in the outlet store.

Yes, you are absolutely right.
I am confused a lot.
Sony Vaio f was full HD.,2D panel and it had quad core processor and basically their basic configuration.for 771 with tax.

I lost it due to bad luck.

Currently I am using Vaio fz140 eb which came out with vista.
Its tunning Gen.windows 7 home premium.but after 4.5 yrs of gruelling use when I completed my residency.its showing its age.
Wireless connection disconnects every now and then.

Now I will summarize what I think.

Vaio f is having premium Vaio panel which is full HD and its bulky as you rightly said.it won't be more than desktop replacement system.no portability
Only thing is panel is awesome as I found over yrs,Sony gives best panels among windows pc.I used Toshiba,Acer, dell and HP over at friends place and all.

MB p is again as you rightly said better used with native os x .
Not worth using with boot camp.
It will give me portability and that apple care for 3 yrs but I really can't justify price increase of 400$ or so.

Latitude is what I am liking so far.
Its having same 3 yrs warranty without any extra cost.its full Hd panel is considered best along with solid build quality.its supposed to highly reliable.

Regarding what I want is,
Solid construction and worthwhile system which can last me for next 3 yrs.
I certainly need portable system and it has to powerful enough.

Am I right on track with latitude?

Hi all,
i finally managed to zero in on dell latitude 6520.
one doubt i would like to ask is,
If I get currently dual core i5 and then can I upgrade core i7 later date?

Hi all,
I finally settled for dell latitude e^6520.
its core i5 2520m
4gb RAM
500 gb 7200 rpm disk
DVD writer
15.6 inch 1600*900
nvs 4200 512 mb
3 yrs nbd warranty.

I bought this in student deal for my sister.
I will update this thread once I get it.

old saying
whatever happens,happens for good.
what say guys?

So long as you have no intention of gaming on it, it's fine, funnily enough I think the inbuilt graphics are actually faster than the nvidia card.
