It is a 40" Sony Bravia from 2008. It looks like maybe one of the backlights went out, but I'm not sure. Some google searching say it could be the inverter? I believe the inverter could be replaced but I don't know about a backlight. I replaced one on an old laptop before and it was a pain. The laptop only had one however. Don't really want to replace the TV right now as if I were going to get a new one I'd get a 4K TV though I can't afford one currently.

That really sucks. I've been doing a lot of searching and it seems like it's either the panel or the tcon board, but probably the panel. Paid $1100 for this TV back in 2008. It's old, but for that much money you'd expect it to last longer. :\

I have a 46" Bravia back from 2008 too and about 2 years back it developed 2 horizontal line very close to each other, probably 1 pixel apart, about 1 inch from the left side of the TV, almost like dead pixels. They are seen 90% of the time and change color between blue and green. I dont think my next TV will be Sony.

I hate to say it but I've never owned a Sony product that didn't die an early death going back to my Walkman in the '80's.

Nothing seems like it's built to last anymore. I recently retired a CRT TV which was still working fine after seventeen years. A friend had a similar experience. They were made by Philips, so that's what I got for an HDTV too. So far so good but it's pretty new.

Are you sure it is an CFL lighted backlight and not LED? Sony Bravias did come with edge lighted LED models such as: KDL42EX440. It could be a defective LED or even a cable loose blocking the light.

That's what it looks like to me - edge lit backlight string failure.

It is a KDL-40V2500. It's actually a 2007 model. I don't think they had LED backlighting back then.

OK, wow, a 2007. Yep, probably a CFL backlight.

An 8 year old Sony TV.:hmm:

It's far exceeded its Sony expected lifetime. Buy a new TV. :)

True, but I can probably live with it for now. I had a Dell LCD that I bought in 2004 that was still working when I sold it last year. To be fair, I did have to repair the power board 2 years ago. Cost me $4 in parts. Was hoping I could fix this one too.
