Meh, as long as it's not made for cameras, I couldn't really care less.
Camcorders might actually be able to benefit with such a thing with the large file size requirements.

Thing will have amazing transfer speeds. Will be an amazing new storage tech, but thankfully won't really be of much desktop use. Too many available as it is.

"The SxS? memory card specification uses flash memory and complies with the ExpressCard? industry standard, and the card connects directly to computer systems through the high-speed PCI-Express? bus."

I don't see what's wrong here, not like Sony created a new format that requires its own unique reader...

These two posts sum up my thoughts pretty well. Seems like the OP is trying too hard to find reasons to hate Sony.

AND the title needs "Sony AND SanDisk" nothing like a biased news thread. OP must be from MSNBC :)

Did you not read the article? It's PCI Express, not a new format. Were you bashing on those old PCMCIA drives because IDE drives already existed??

The SxS? memory card specification uses flash memory and complies with the ExpressCard? industry standard, and the card connects directly to computer systems through the high-speed PCI-Express? bus. ExpressCard? has been rapidly adopted by PC manufacturers to replace the legacy PC Card? form factor, giving the SxS? memory cards broad support in post-production hardware.

You can stick it in your laptop and it will work.

It's the EXACT SAME PRINCIPLE as Panasonic's P2 cards which connect to PCMCIA instead of Express Card.

OMFG OH NOES TRANSCEND ANNOUNCES YET ANOTHER MEMORY CARD FORMAT

WTF is wrong with these people????

Liek OMGZ

</Idiot Mode>

As mentioned before, it's an ExpressCard/34 module - SxS is just a way for them to say "Can handle at least X MB/s".

But wait, OH TEH NOES. That must mean that USB 2.0 is a HORRIBLE CONSPIRACY TO MAKE YOUR USB 1.1 DEVICES USELESS, BECAUSE IT'S FASTER.

Damnit, I swore I already closed that tag.

So it's not the exact same thing then.

FIXED

I guess. High capacity, reliable storage that you drop into a slot on the side of your notebook. Used for camcorders.
