Sony Admits PS3 Delay Possible

Issues with mass production of Blu-ray drives could be to blame if spring system launch is pushed back to fall.

In recent weeks, speculation that Sony would not make its previously announced spring 2006 release date for the PlayStation 3 has grown after a Merrill Lynch report predicted the new console would be pushed back until the end of the year, or perhaps later. Japanese site Sankei Web is reporting that Sony has acknowledged the possibility of a delay in the system, and that such a delay would be due to problems with the mass production of the console's built-in Blu-ray drive.

A Sony spokesperson is quoted in the article as saying, "The highest quality picture is vital to the PS3. There is a possibility of delay [to the launch] if delivery of parts is delayed."

The article suggests that if Sony does delay the system, it would put the launch off until after October in order to hit the busy holiday season. It also quotes Enterbrain president Hiokazu Hamamura as saying that if Sony hasn't started taking orders for the system by now, it would be difficult for the company to launch the PS3 in May.

If this is true then you probably won't have one in your house for another year. But hey, that just means it will pwn the X360 even more, right?!

Whats DNF?

I just want the PS3 for the games and Blu-ray; Killzone 2, MGS4, GT 5 (or whatever its called), and some others I cant think of off the top of my head.

I play games on computer more than I do with my PS2, but thats more of a fact I cant afford anything right now, college is draining my funds and Financial Aid wont give me money till next year 🙁

DNF is Duke Nuke'em Forever. In development for the past 100 years.

It'll be interesting to see what Sony has up their sleeve for E3. They've only had mock units behind glass for all of the shows recently and haven't shown a single playable game. That doesn't bode well for a spring release even when their definition of spring is until the end of June.

I just can't imagine them ramping up so quickly to a launch at this point. I definitely do not believe that we will see a PS3 until this fall or later....and who know if they will be able to launch the PS3 in the N. American market before Christmas. It would be a mistake if they didn't but they have to serve their Japan market first.
 
heh check all the older posts about PS3 that i've posted in where I said "quote me on this - PS3 will not be out in the US this year" then get back to me 😛

i'm not surprised at all because I've known this would be happening months ago. of course sony won't admit it early on because people held off on the 360 for the ps3. now they hear the news, figure they've already waited a few months, why not continue to wait?

and there won't be any killer apps at the launch of the PS3 either ... there never is, ever at the launch of a new system (aside from the N64).

but fight night 3 is the beginning of "true" next-gen games IMO. all of the game sites are saying Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter truly is the first "next-gen" experience on the 360. About a week will tell us.

PGR3 and Fight Night R3 on a glorious 60" HDTV.

Alas, I can't get my hands on a 360 yet but at least the tv and surround sound are ready!

I'm playing a buncha games that can't be played on MY computer unless I spent about $400 in updates on it to play it on a 19" LCD w/2.1 sound in a chair, whereas I (didnt spend $400 cause I won a 360) can play my 360 on my 50" DLP w/5.1 sound on my couch w/no wires involved.

Not to mention, I can play Fight Night Round 3 on my 360 and not on a PC, and I can play GR:AW in 8 days on my 360 and will have to wait a few months to play it on PC (since it was just announced to be delayed).
 
Most likely the first running games we see will be E3 if we're lucky. I really don't see it coming together any earlier than that with actual launch not till Fall.

I'm more than happy with my 360 and I think I'll be even happier with it if it gives Sony enough of a competition to bring the price of the PS3 to a reasonable figure...I'm assuming it is going to cost a lot more than the $400 I sank into my 360.

In the mean time I'm looking forward to Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Elders Scrolls: Oblivion, Gears of War, and many other awesome titles that should be showing up in the near future (and before Sony even launches its system).

Currently I'm totally loving Fight Night 3, PGR3, and COD2. Might pick up Condemned if I finish COD2 before Advanced Warfighter comes out.

Hmmm. PGR3, Geometry Wars: Evolved, DOA4, Full Auto (ok not great), Wik: Fable of Souls. Soon to be playing, Fight Night, GRAW, Oblivion, Burnout: Revenge, Top Spin 2.

Which of these games can I play on the PS3 right now? None.

Not too mention Oblivion, Burnout Revenge, The Outfit, BF2MC, Far Cry IP, as well as others slated for March. So ready to get my hands on GRAW and Oblivion.

Yup, and there are some previews saying that the while you will be able to play with mods on the PC version of Oblivion, it actually runs better on the 360.
