Sooooo how is the Sony a57, at shooting video, and if someone has one what have you been able to compare it to?

The video on A57 is better than any Canon Rebel or Nikon DX series, thanks to aperture control in live view, auto-focus in live view, and focus peaking (though, for Canons, you can get focus peaking via Magic Lantern firmware, plus a lot more cool stuff).

Although A57 has a bigger sensor, it is still not as good as Panasonic DMC-GH3 in video quality, so if you're buying mainly for video, I would got with GH3. A57 is very good as a combo for both stills and video, but not great at either. Also, consider the lens that will work nicely for video, such as the Sony 16-50/2.8. Kit lens driven by a screw and small apertures are not ideal for video.

Thanks for your post, we have a a230, which doesn't do video. And were wondering I guess if we got the a57 if it would be ok, if its beating the canons and Nikon in the same price range, then I am sure it will be fine. We have a great conditionMinolta beer can and 50 prime. And of course the kit lens that came with the a230.

I guess is there a all purpose lens to make the a57 a better video taker, or sick with what a have for glass for now?

Well, since you already have three lenses that are compatible with A57, I would just start with them before splurging on a new lens.

Since you have alpha lenses to play with, try reninting an a57 before you purchase. lensrental(s).com rents just about anything. Defintiely worth the "try before you buy" on a pricey new gadget.

I rented an H60 flash and Sony 70-200 2.8 for a few days and their process fore rental and return is pretty easy.
