Sony 52X24X52 ROM is scratching my discs!!!

I have noticed that my CD-RW is making surface scratches on my discs. I have only noticed it recently though. The scratches are not circular, but from side to side. I have cleaned out the tray with a cloth and blew the drive out with compressed air. I have not noticed any disc skipping, but it makes me pretty nervous. What could be causing this?
