Was browsing Frys today and noticed that the Sony SDM-V72W has a $200 rebate [good till June 30th]

These monitors are great, especially if you view a lot of widescreen content. I personaly bought one of these over the Winter because I needed a replacement monitor, and wanted to get something with HDTV capatability. You can hook up devices like camcorders, VCRs, DVD players and video game systems either with standard compsite, S-Video, or Component inputs. If you use the component cables, you can view high definition images [the monitor supports 480i/p, 520p, 720p, and 1080i]. The only things lacking are a TV Turner and PIP support.

Specifications:

LCD size: 17.1"
LCD panel type: a-Si TFT Active Matrix

Vertical scan range: 48-85Hz
Colors: 16.2 million
Viewing angle:
Horizontal: 150 degrees
Vertical: 120 degrees
Response Time (Rise/Fall): 22ms
Tilt Range: -3 degrees to + 15 degrees
Video input connectors:
Component (Y Pb Pr)
S-Video
Video
PC
Audio Speaker Power: 3 W x 2
Power Management:
Normal Operation: 49 watts (max.)
Deep Sleep Mode: 2 watts (average)

here is the PDF: ].Rebate form Outpost.com

And you can order the monitor from most retail chains [the rebate has a list of acceptable chains]

City of Industry had some in stock today when I was there this afternoon. I also heard that the Palo Alto/Sunnyvale stores had them.

You dont need to get them from Fry's. Most retailers [check the rebate] are accepted, including Circuit City, Best Buy, and CompUSA. You can also use Outpost.com to order the monitor if you like.

one thing you have to remember is cost of LCDs. Other competing models, like the Samsung 127W is the same size with the addition of DVI support, but it has no connections for video input. The 127W will cost you 599 after a 50 rebate.
The Viewsonic's n1700w has the same features of the Sony model, with DVI and a tuner, but has a MSRP of 899 [dont remember if there is a $100 still active on this one].

If you want a great LCD that will do widescreen and less than a thousand dollars, then the Sony model is a great deal.

Ah yes... Got one of them 1600SW units (supports 720p HDTV) back then as well... Excellent LCD screen. Seen larger ones within my price range (aka Dell 2000FP) but for some reason I like the 1600x1024 widescreen. :) Can't beat the 500-600 we paid for it! :D

As for the Sony monitor, if it supported a higher resolution, it might be worth it. Kinda expensive IMO (wonder how much of the name you're buying).

I have a 1600SW that I use for work. The cheapest way to obtain them is to get them from dead corporations or Ebay, so generally the warrenty is fubar. And if your Mulit Link adapter dies, you be screwed if you want to use your commercial graphics card, unless you like spending 500 or so on a new one :)

Also, for HDTV images, you still need a RGB transcoder box to run the images [so if you have a monitor already, a transcoder box - about 200 - will do it for you]
