I am not a gun guy, but am curious to how they get permits for their "creations" and how they can make automatic weapons.

Edit: thought it was harder to get the class 3 permits

simple. apply at the ATF and pay about 10,000 bucks in license fees.

A tax stamp that cost $200 per item is needed to own a Class III weapon/suppressor/etc ...making them requires a dealer/manufacturer (Class II/FFL Type 07) to pay a special occupational tax, and since '86 they can not make full autos for civilian markets, only law enforcement and military contracts.

Don't think it's quite that expensive, but it is not cheap. I know a couple class II FFL's that make SBR's and suppressors, and they can do it out of their little shops.

Getting a manufacture's FFL (federal firearms license) AND the Class 2 SOT (special occupational tax) status isn't extraordinarily difficult or expensive (about ~$1000 a year,) and allows you to create any sort of firearm you want (non-explosive firing,) including fully automatic ones.

There's a big thread about Sons of Guns on the SomethingAwful. It's worth having on in the background, but not terribly interesting. "Hey, let's build a triamese! Derp!"

I was kind of disappointed with that show. Some of the stuff they build looks really cobbed together. They basically buy off the shelf components and hack them up to make what they want. They really aren't fabricating stuff. Now if they had the shop the OCC guys have they could really fabricate some stuff.

some of it is interesting. i like the main guy.

but it follows the same model as 'pawn stars' and 'american pickers' and all those other newer reality shows.

at least with some of the older stuff, like, say, american chopper or monster garage, it was actually close to your standard ~42 minutes of programming.

these shows are like five minutes of content stretched into a 30 minute slot. like 5-6 commercial breaks and before and after every one they have to replay things and remind you what happened on a dumbass reality show three friggin' minutes ago.

then add in the product placement. holy jesus. it's one thing to hang banners on the walls at OCC, it's another to fucking spend two minutes talking about subway during every show.

i am certainly no gun expert, but i would imagine your typical gunsmith has an assortment of hand and specialty tools, and a milling machine. i would think most of the stuff they need to do can be accomplished with some kind of lathe or vertical mill.

they don't look NEARLY big enough to be able to justify buying a huge computer-controlled CNC machine. they prob outsource to a local shop for things that require complex machining.

i am curious as to how they make suppressors. they all seem to be multipiece, so i imagine making the baffle set inside isn't THAT complex (or as much as it would be on a one piece suppressor, however the hell that's done).

I like it. He's a gun nut and has the skill to build whatever he can think of. Granted they do some things that are questionable at best, like firing tracers into dry weeds.

I like Will, his accent and old school witticisms always make me smile.

The stuff they build looks cobbled together because they are in the prototype stage, dur. Their rifles and what they deliver to cops looks top notch.

Also, jarheads ++ in my book.

Meh, could be so much more if they actually detailed some of the engineering and know how of an armorer. The rigged explosions when they go shooting are mega lame too, I think they give people the wrong impression of what a bullet does.

So I guess another interesting idea ruined by the 30 minute reality show formula. Too bad, because Wil seems like an interesting guy.

Do you know how dangerous that information is?

Seriously, try talking about it in popular company, I double dog dare you.
