I would suggest that you wait until Windows Vista is released. All the promises and features that MS promises are worth less than zilch (look at the initial list of features and compare to the now likely feature set). Besides, what does Longhorn offer you that XP doesn't?

For starters (and this is just opinion) it looks better. It does offer a much easier to use explorer, MUCH better rights management, a better deployment solution then past versions, and will supposedly show better over all performance then XP...those are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head.

Use Stardock or some 3rd party to customize XP OR if Vista is a concern, wait till "Ready for Longhorn" stickers appear on computers (and they will). Last I heard, most OEMs were getting ready to cash in on the Vista Ready marketing in the Fall or Winter of this year or early next year.

Last I heard, Christmas 06. Thanksgiving 06 maybe.

I have a longhorn box box up now and there are some features that stardock (Or any other theme tweaking program for that matter) will not be able to recreate. The over all color scheme and look sure. The functionality...no. If vista delivers what MS says it will it should make life as a sys admin that much easier. Easier deployment with new image system, scale admin rights up and down based on need (In other words if you log on as a domain admin and browse the net IE does not run with domain admin powers...but if you open up ad users and computers you are at full rights again.), finally a new command shell (if it makes it in lol), a new and improved version of explorer (the integrated file browsing utility not IE)....this I like a lot...a lot easier to find files once you get used to the interface, And Vista also carries a new version of internet explorer (IE 7) with a nice tabbed interface (yes I realize firefox already has the same features just mentioning changes.).

As far as the date goes you are probably not far off. The first beta is out now. Last I heard second beta was in another 5 or 6 months. So hopefully by Feb 2006 we will see beta 2 which should be a public beta. Then is when we should all be forming our real opinions.

As far as Vista's 3D interface (Avalon) goes, IEG\2 and GMA900 don't support the features required, namely Vertex Shader 2.0, for all of the spiffy effects. If you can deal with it looking more similar to XP, then yes, it will work. But, if you want all of the spiffy features enabled, then look elsewhere.
