I reboot my gaming rig; after POST I get the grim message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows Root>\System32\hal.dll

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

To me, that's very bad. 🙁 Do I do this via recovery console? And if so, what's the correct steps to accomplish it? I'm not willing to throw in the towel yet.

Ah, I think I found it, for those who don't know.

HAL crap

It's just a wild guess, but I bet it works the same way for XP. I'll let everyone know

Keeps telling me that access is denied. How exactly do I expand hal.dl_ to c:\windows\system32 -- I am running Windows XP Professional, BTW. I go into D:\i386 and it isn't working. 🙁

can you get in under safe mode and try to fix it from there? A system rollback maybe? Or pop in the Windows XP disk and try doing a repair...

You may have to reinstall windows try that first , if it doesn't work probably have to reformatt your hdd.
