hey, I'm wondering, which is better? I dont really care about interfaces or ease of use or resource hogging. I'm wondering which one sounds better

I can't really tell a difference.

Windows media player has some kinda SRS boost though which definitely adds a bit to the sound. Maybe try that?

There are many arguements on this particular choice.

For me I find the following:

Winamp - simple low resource useage program, simple interface, sounds good.

Sonique - more complex interface, uses more resources but sounds better than Winamp in my estimation.

In the end, after using Sonique for around 6/8 months, I returned to the "snap" of Winamp.
I've not used Sonique for well over a year so it may be a different story nowadays.

Personally Winamp has stood the test of time if you ask me ;)

Do a search here and you will find a few of the old arguements - sorry - discussions ;)

play with the equalizer in winamp if you have trouble. IMHO, it sounds as good as the speakers connected to it.

Well, I used Sonique for a couple years, but last fall switched to Winamp. Here's my opinion of the 2:

1) At default setup, Sonique sounds better, having a nice warm sound.
2) WinAmp has more plugins and I've found a combo that to me sounds better than Sonique.
3) Sonique has a much more diverse interface, which allows much more customization than WinAmp(WinAmps is rather dull and constraining). To further clarify: WinAmps basically comes in 2 sizes, normal and bar(can be adjusted somewhat, though most skins become icky). Sonique allows the skinner to make the interface as big or small as he/she chooses, this offers a greater level of customization. I often use my system from across the room when first waking up. It took me a long time to find a half decent WinAmp skinthat was visible from a distance. With Sonique I had a much easier time finding a large interface that looked good too.
4) I think Sonique is dead, but don't know for sure. If it is, it's too bad, I wish WinAmp would be more like Sonique.

I've used Winamp for several years. I tried Sonique for a while and although it wasn't bad, I found Winamp to be slightly better.

For AOL owning Winamp, at least they haven't f*cked it up. Really, Winamp kicks ass still, without getting all bloated like WMP, ICQ, RealPlayer (omfg RealOne is pathetic), etc...

IMO, the only thing Sonique has over winamp is better skins. I used Sonique for a few months, but went back to winamp beacause of it's better interface. And as far as sound goes, I think they are pretty much equal. If you don't like how Winamp sounds you can always grab some plugins until you find one you like.

I'm not sure about newer versions of Sonique, but older versions produced less accurate output than Winamp. {offtopic}Personally, I found Sonique's interface to be cluttered, unintuitive, and bulky. But this could be due to my bias of years of experience with Winamp. Although I haven't tried Sonique out in a my excellent compatriot's age because Winamp has everything I need. {/offtopic}

edit- I would suggest performing tests of your own, it's the best way to choose what's best for your ears.

The best part of Winamp is its active development; things are continuously being fixed and updated. Nullsoft is currently working on Winamp 3 which appears to be a fundamentally different program from 1.x and 2.x Winamp. I hope that it doesn't turn into bloatware, but the component model looks very interesting indeed.
