Sonicwall Firewall

Our business has a sonicwall firewall. We have one in each of our three stores. We have an older system that is ran on dumb terminals. We are slowly upgrading to PC's when i get enough approved funding. We are having a problem with the firewalls. We seem to have to reset our main firewall (the one location where our main server is) almost every month. One or both external locations can not access the computer system. Can anyone tell me why we would have to reset our firewall so often?

I doubt I'm going to be of much help here, but are you sure that it is the firewall, and not another communications problem that happens to be resolved by a router bounce (which would probably reset current connections)?

It seems to happen when we have our nightly backup. We have a few remote users but they get kiked off by 10:00 when the server runs the backup. We end up reseting the firewall maybe once a month or so because we have one or both locations down. So maybe it is when it is running the backup

Is the backup being performed through the router (is it performing backup of off-site locations to the central server), or is it just backing up local information?

If it's just backing up local information, and the problem seems to happen right around that time, repeatedly, I would look into the server more than the firewall. Perhaps bouncing the firewall just gives the server that needed kick to accept connections again. I've seen it happen before, but it's rare.

I have to look for sure but the backup is the same every night except for the end of the month full backup and yearly full backup. But this happens randomly and is followed by the one of the nightly backups at random. I am going to check to see if the logs into the server show someone connecting the server to do routine maintnance to our main program on the server.

Nonetheless, even if it only happens occasionally, if it always happens at about the same time another event happens, I'd look for a fault caused by (or aggravated by) that event.

thanks for your help. I put a call into the computer system company that owns the program and the tech that helped set up the firewall is suppose to call back. In case he doesn't know does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've got another question, to try to narrow things down some more. 😉

When you have to reboot the router, do you soft boot it (via the admin interface), or hard boot it (by cycling power to it)?

Next time you have the problem, try accessing the admin interface for the router, and see if it's throwing any errors, of if it's requesting a restart. If you aren't able to even get to the admin interface, then I would suspect the SonicWall. But if you can get to the admin interface, and can poke around in it, then I wouldn't suspect it as much.

Also, how are the remote sites connected? If all remote sites are connecting through one interface on the SonicWall, and not all of them are losing connectivity, and only part of them are, then I would also suspect that the issue is not with the SonicWall.

If you can I would also suggest trying the latest firmware. I'm running 3.1.0.7 on my TZ-170 and it's completely stable unlike some previous releases.
