Sonic Wall VS Fire Box Watch Gaurd

We have two following units in our server room.

1. Sonic Wall NSA 250 MW

2. Fire Box Watch Gaurd X750e

I searched about the Sonic Wall and came up with the following information on the Web.

http://livedemo.sonicwall.com/demo/demo.html

https://www.watchguard.com/products/core-e/overview.asp

So, it is said that they both are firewall that avoid the unwanted communications!

But I don't understand that why we have two?!!!

At the first glance I thought the Silver one must be a wireless Modem!

How can I understand these concepts?!

What they do depends on how they're configured and what's connected to the interfaces? They both have similar capabilities when it comes to firewall, vpn & WAN load balancing at first glance.

Oh I see. Well we have VPN and I they are connected to the server and bunch of switches. However the silver one I was told that I need to power cycle it to fix the issue. So, I think the silver one plays a role as fire-wall router! right?

Can you elaborate on "fix the issue"...what issue?

Based on your questions and posts, you REALLY need to take a few classes for networking if you want to actually understand the concepts. Asking questions like these in a forum isn't going to help you much. At the very least, pick up a few books like comptia network+ and a few others on amazon.

Kevin,

The issue I addressed it is related to a printer that its IP Address was changed and we could not get it to work!

Yes, I will study. But my job is not network. That is why you think this is awkward to ask such questions!

Thanks anyways!
I always welcome CONSTRUCTIVE criticism not DESTRUCTIVE ones!

You're job isn't networking but yet they're having you do network troubleshooting?? Hmm, I'd be asking about that? As far as the printer issue, the only thing I could pinpoint is if the sonicwall box is handling DHCP and by rebooting it, it cleared the DHCP table.

But that's an issue in of itself as a network printer should always be assigned a static IP address outside the dhcp range.

The reason I suggested picking up a book is that your questions so far have been geared toward basic fundamentals of networking and a forum like this IS NOT the best place to spend time learning the basics, a book and a lab environment is a better use of your time.

Kevin,

As for the printer issue. yes, it is already assigned to a static IP Address. If we again have the same issue, I honestly have no idea what else to do.

Talking about my company and responsibilities, yes, my main role is not networking. however, as the IT Dep. doe snot have many people, i am into this field.

As you said this forum is not for the basic questions. So, what Forums do you recommend to ask basic questions please?

Henri

I didn't say this forum wasn't for asking basic questions. I said this forum is not the best place to spend time learning the basics. If you're actually looking at getting more into the field of networking or basic troubleshooting of networks, your best use of your time would be to pick up a book or two and learn the basics. Knowledge is power!

Comptia network+ would be a good start

I don't think anyone is qualified to say what kind of networking questions go here. So your root question is which one is acting as the router? It is very likely to be the one that is directly connected to your interface to the internet be it T1, cable, DSL, fiber. There are very few cases where that directly connected device will be in bridge mode with a device further into the network is acting as the router/gateway. In either case, getting into their interfaces to inspect is a must. If you can provide more details about the network, there are plenty of people here that can help, but there is a great forum that you might also try here.

To Kevin: Yes, the more you have knowledge about network, the easier problems are for your to resolve. However, people's experience is a shortcut to get around your problems and have it fixed.

To PliotronX: Many thanks for introducing me to that website! I will get back with the details soon. We do not have many devices in our server-room. I really like to understand the the application of each item in there!

I do know that we have Fiber Optic that is the source of Data but I need to check if it is connected to the wired one or wireless one! ( I believe wireless one)

Thanks!

Do you or your company have ANY network documentation with how things are setup? If not, first diagram your physical connections starting from your WAN entry point (Internet provider, Fiber Optic, etc) and seeing what goes where and what plugs into what. Then login to each device and SEE how each interface is configured. Also...back up everything you can before doing anything with it, just in case. When in doubt, back it up!! Plus gives you a point in time reference for future in case you lose something.

This is exactly I am going to do. No, they do not have. As you said, I would like to draw a digram and prepare a documentation. Yes, I have not take risks!

It is quite common to use a SonicWALL placed after the gateway router in bridge mode to provide only web content filtering. I do it all the time.

Comparing the two firewalls listed, they are about equal in capabilities. I haven't done SSLVPN on a Firebox so can't speak to that.

Sounds good! Thanks for sharing this!
