I grew up on Nintendo systems, so I have to go with SMB. Sonic is great though.

If I were to have both consoles in front of me right now I would definitely pick up sonic, because I haven't played in a long time, but SMB was definately a better game.

I'd have to go with Mario. SMB3 was a great one, and Super Mario 64 was revolutionary.

It is unfortunate that the essence of what is great about the 2D games has proved elusive to bring to the 3D games. I have my own ideas why this is so, but I'll want to see the results of the next generation of games before I comment.

Mario for games. Sonic for cartoons. "Sonic! He can really move. Sonic! He's got an attitude. Sonic! He's the fastest thing alive."

super mario 3 was the bestest game ever... well except for maybe the legend of zelda original.

Just for kicks, throw Crash Bandicoot in the mix. Now that's a laugh. That was a pathetic attempt by Sony to give their system a mascot.

Sonic CD all the way! It is one best classics of all time. You have to admit that sonic game music was ahead of its time.

Crash Bandicoot is slightly on the newer side. I loved that game until I realzied how retarded it was.

I like both games... but I think SMB3 gives it the edge over all sonic games.

I way preferred blazing through the levels in Sonic the Hedgehog. I liked Sonic better until they first tried 3D. Sonic 3D was horrid. I never tried any games newer than that.

Mario FTW. SMB, SMB3, SM64, and SMS were awesome games IMO.

Mario crossed over from 2D to 3D seamlessly, Sonic, not so much. Honestly, if Sonic Xtreme didn't get canned back in the Saturn days, it might've turned out different (Sonic 2 on the Genesis was one hell of a game)

That is a coarse description of the "essence" I mentioned in my post. Sonic Adventure had the big environments wherein you ran from level to level, but the zones were still largely linear, and the collision detection sucked horribly, because they spent so little time on refining it; and I'm still thinking larger, so such levels will need to be generated on the fly.

I don't know the specifics of how the new games are progressing, but I see hints of Sonic Team going in this and other directions that are helpful to producing a better 3D Sonic game.
