I've played Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog II (finished), Sonic the Hedgehog III, Sonic and Knuckles (finished), Sonic CD (finished I think), Sonic 3d Blast (this game sucks so much ***), Sonic Adventure (finished), Sonic Adventure 2 (finished), and no other Sonic game matters after that.
I've been playing Sonic the Hedgehog on the PSP. And it made me think that there hasn't been too many good Sonic releases. My favorite game as a kid was Sonic CD, followed by Sonic and Knuckles, then Sonic the Hedgehog II. Later, Sonic Adventure is probably the one that I think represents what Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay should be all about. What is Sonic all about? His name says it all - speed. And can Sonic go fast - of course! ... or can he?
In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic can go fast provided you are given the opportunity to do so. In fact, going fast is actually very, very dangerous. Going slowly will help you keep your rings. If there isn't an object in your way to stop you or hurt you, there will be an enemy. How are you supposed to go fast when there is crap in your way; or lava; or endless pits. Sonic is fast, but only his speed, as his acceleration from stop is just painful. If you replaced Sonic's current controls with Mario's responsiveness, it would have been better. Because going slow helps you survive, coupling it with his slow start from stop makes for some very tedious gameplay.
Fortunately, Sonic Team realized their mistakes and fixed most of it in Sonic the Hedgehog II. Now you can spin from a stopped position for fast acceleration, although it kind of sucks because after the initial boost, Sonic loses all acceleration and you're left with the sluggish start from stop again. Still, it's very useful in many situations. They also have more areas where you can just run fast. Sonic, the way it's supposed to be. They also had less obstacles in your way which made the game a little easier to speed with Sonic during normal combat gameplay.
I don't remember Sonic and Knuckles much except that I played it a lot. Sonic III - I remember have great new moves that I thought added to the series, and great graphics and cinematic cut-scenes. I never got to beat it though because of this retarded thing in the casino level.
Sonic CD was probably the best ever Sonic game. I don't remember much about it either, but I remember it being awsome. The whole going through time thing and seeing the same, complex level in a different time was amazing.
Sonic Adventure was a great transition from 2D to 3D in terms of controls, but this release is a double edge sword. While it had some of the greatest Sonic levels and gameplay ever made, it also had some of the worst as well. The first level you play in as Sonic is a level that I can play over and over and over and over. Most of the time you hold the forward button and you just look at the pretty graphics. Occasionally there is some things in your way, but using the new moves pioneered in Sonic III, they tend not to slow you down a whole lot. That's what I love in a Sonic game. The whole adventure thing was an interesting idea that turned for the worst. But the game wouldn't have been all that bad except they put in those other guys that you had to play with. Yeah - it's called Sonic Adventure. Not Sonic and Friends Adventure. I would've enjoyed have many more Sonic levels than any of those other guys.
Sonic Adventure II tried to fix some issues with the first Sonic Adventure but ultimately turned into a worse game. Due to people complaining that they first Sonic Adventure gameplay was too simple, they put more crap in the way so you can't go as fast anymore, making the gameplay a little more rigid. They had more other characters to play with other than Sonic. Fetching crystals isn't fun, it's stupid. If I wanted to shoot things, I'd go play a shooter. They also got rid of the Adventure mode similar to the first Sonic Adventure and made it all about stages. I actually liked the Adventure mode and I wished they would've fixed it instead of getting rid of it all together.
Now, in every new Sonic game, they create a new character and mess up the gameplay even more. People treat Sonic like he was a legend, but I think that the Sonic Team has missed the ball most of the time with mediocre games. Or utter crap like Sonic 3d blast.
