Sonic Rush - some thoughts.

This game is pretty crappy. I'm in the middle of it and I hate it. Let me tell you what I was looking for in this game. I was looking for a way back into the past. I wanted an old school Sonic. This looked like the best game for that and had decent reviews. I was SO wrong.

Graphics are nice and crisp. They make sonic look like a cartoon and make him jump and do all of these moves that make him look goofy. Sonic is no longer a cool hedgehog, he's a fruit-cake. The Sonic team has lost it's touch. Sonic is 3d in a 2d world except in boss fights.

The sound quality isn't that great and I've heard better toons from the older games.

Dual Screen. The levels seem really big. But using both screens. What kind of pointless BS is that. Cause technically, you're only gonna be using 1 screen at a time. It sounds kind of cool in the beginning, but it's only there to confuse the crap out of you. First the bottom screen's white point is a little darker, making the graphics look brighter on top and it feels weird. And you never really know when he gets to the top or bottom if you're crossing from screen to screen. It's confusing because sometimes, for example, if you're playing on the top screen: if you jump down, the top screen will follow sonic. It's only at a certain point that Sonic will cross over and it happens when you least expect it so you just get confused for a 1-2 seconds.

Gameplay is stupid. The levels are big, but they use repetetive patterns. The are big from top to bottom so that each time you play, maybe you'll screw up and go through a different path. Not a bad idea, but if they are made from similar patterns, it's stupid. If you play one level, you might come across a repeated pattern. It's only happened to me once. Each Zone has two levels though. And the second levels almost always seem similar to the first levels. A little effort goes a long way. :|. Something I've hated that's happened ever since Sonic Adventure 2 is that they put crap in your way, you know "obstacles" while you're speeding down a steep hill. Are they trying to make us realize the effects of speeding on the road or what. Sonic as his name suggest is all about speed, WTF was Sonic Team thinking. Especially because Sonic runs so fast that you don't even see the enemy until it's too late. And then what makes it worse is that depending on how you are hit by the enemy, it'll send your rings shooting from you like rockets. Annoying. Speaking of enemies, killing them is rediculous. Sonic has a limited jump in this game, so it makes it harder to kill them and you have to be in ball form or else, you'll take damage. When you want to kill a chain of enemies, you hit the first guy in ball form, then come out of that form and then the rest of the enemies will be hit with your feet to die. But if you try to kill an emey with your feet without first hit in ball form, you take damage. Another stupid thing is in previous games you could press the A button and then press it again to shoot forward. Here, you have to press another button - R. Why?!

Making a new paragraph, but still talking about gameplay. The older games had a connection between the first level and second level and boss fight. Usually, the second level was the continuation of the first level and the boss fight was at the end of the second level. And they also weren't similarly patterned either but... In this game, after the second level, it seems like you're teleported to the boss fight like it shows no continuation. That's stupid. And the boss fights come in full 3d and are all similar and require you to run around in a circle kicking ass in similar fashions with different obstacles. Oh and the special stages are like in Sonic 2, but with the stylus, so you're not completely free from it. Playing with Sonic also unlocks a character, at least so far - I'm halfway done with sonic. I'm not fond of that. I didn't like it with Sonic Adventure or any other sonic. The game is called SONIC, not SONIC AND FREINDS. Who cares about them. I haven't tried the other character yet, but if Sonic sucks, I won't have to bother with her.
