Signed on with Sonic.net DSL from my previous AT&T service in summer 2011. Sonic uses AT&T's phone lines and has arrangements with AT&T to service the lines and boxes when necessary, here at my Berkeley, CA location. Sonic's offices are in Santa Rosa.

Best DL speed I have gotten is 5.5Mbps, I got this a few days ago. I was at 4.5Mbps a couple days later, decided to call Sonic and find out why.

In 2013 I was having a big problem with a site I needed decent throughput from and wasn't getting it. Sonic sent out a guy who brought one of their modem+router items, a Pace 4111N. We installed that and the results were bad, so he took it back with him in the truck. I've been using a Comtrend CT-5072T DSL modem, probably from that time. I got it from Sonic, AFAIK exactly when that guy came out in 2013.

I found out 3 days ago when I called Sonic complaining about erratic and slow download speeds that their records showed that I was using the Pace 4111N modem/router that they tried in my system, didn't work and wasn't left here. I was told that I was renting the thing this whole time at $6.50/month. I have never gotten any information about this. My charges are to my credit card (now $67/month for DSL and nation-wide calling), but I was never informed, certainly haven't been informed in a billing statement (I never get billing statements from them, either email or snail mail), that I was being charged rent for this device I have never had.

The tech support person from whom I found out about all this Sunday said they'd take my word for it that I don't have the Pace 411N modem + router (I've been using an Asus RT-N66U router that I bought myself online since 2014) and that they wouldn't charge me $90 for not returning the Pace 4111N! I was using a Buffalo router before I bought the Asus router (non-N). I have never used their Pace modem/router, it wasn't left here by their technician in 2013, but I've been paying for it monthly ever since!

Before the Comtrend modem I was using a ZTE modem I got from Sonic, the technician said I bought that, and that I bought the Comtrend from them.

I think I should insist on them reimbursing me for all those $6.50 charges they have been dinking me since 2013 for an item I have never had. It wasn't my fault that their system screwed up. The tech support person on Sunday said it was my responsibility to tell them that I didn't have it! WTF! I never got any into from them indicating that they thought I did have it!

FYI, if you have Sonic.net DSL, be aware that you too may be getting charges for something you are not getting. I'm going to call them and complain and insist on a refund. Comments?
