Sonic Boom - SEGA Has Done It Again

SEGA announced yesterday that they will be releasing a new franchise of Sonic called Sonic Boom. There will be a game whose story leads into a CG show that will air on Cartoon Network. To fit this new franchise, the characters have been... slightly reimagined:

I apologize for your childhood.

To be fair, I considered myself a bit of a Sonic fan as a kid. I would read the Archie comics, which were actually not to shabby in the beginning (they got about as loony as all long-running comics do), and play the older games. I never got much into the 3D games, but this one COULD be okay, but it depends a lot on the actual gameplay, which right now, it looks a little more like a Rachet & Clank game than anything.

The TV show sort of reminds me of a not-so-crappy version of that awful cartoon Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (not the Saturday morning one), but I'd still rather see a darker show like Sonic the Hedgehog.

EDIT:

Oh, and Sonic Boom will always remind me of that old Sonic CD song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJXKoubh9sQ

Ugh, I wish they would just let sonic die off, he's a classic character but they're doing to him what they've been doing to mario. What's next? Sonic golf? Sonic kart? Sonic tennis?

Damn it...its in my head now....

Sonic boooooooom ^ sonic booooooom ^ sonic boooooooooomm trouble keeps you runnin faster

And now Lunar and the whole Sega CD generation now...

That's not entirely true...

Mario is actually still successful and fun

eh, i think the game trailer looks pretty cool. has a ratchet and clank feel to it but with the speed factor. too bad it's on nintendo consoles only.

Those leg lengths...

Also, Knuckles should not skip leg day.

Yeah, Knuckles looks REALLY screwed-up. I think the worst part of this is that they put the trailer to Skrillex. That might be the worst part of it all. Maybe it'll be solid, but given the lack of good Sonic games for a decade or so, I am definitely hesitant.

Yeah Mario is still fun, but sonic? Have you played any sonic games in the past 5 years? Sonic was great on Sega, and the old animated sonic cartoons were great, but it's played out now. Knuckles doesn't even look like knuckles, why is he a foot taller than everyone?

I hope Capcom sues SEGA any this game is scrapped. Don't get me wrong, I loved Sonic as a kid on 8-bit and Sonic Adventure is pretty much the pinnacle of Sonic games, but enough it enough. Let SEGA die already. Or, at least, force them into make more Phantasy Star games.

Sonic 2 was the first console game I ever played, and I was a huge Sonic fan as a kid. I actually like this new design for Sonic and Tails. Knuckles is oddly proportioned though. He's supposed to be the same height as Sonic. I still prefer the original designs.

The game might be okay if Sega treats it seriously. Sonic Generations proved it's still possible to make a good Sonic game complete with proper mechanics.

I get the feeling that they're trying to make it more visibly apparent when Knuckles is more of the "bruiser" of the group. His power in the old Genesis games was to be able to break through barriers with his fists, but he was as scrawny as Sonic. Although, using that logic, you'd think Sonic would actually have some leg muscles. 😛 Also, Knuckles could glide through the air in the original games, but I don't see hulk-Knuckles doing that so well.

Uhh...I have some bad news for you. 🙂
Actually Sonic Racing Transformed is an excellent game!

There was also a lot of fervor around the rumor that one of SEGA's three required exclusives would be a Sonic + Mario racing game created by Sumo Digital, the studio that did the Sonic racing games. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. 🙁 I would have preferred it, because while I think Mario Kart has a more interesting theme to it (mostly in regard to the power-ups), I prefer the racing mechanics in Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed (not so much in the original).

I often power up my Genesis High Definition Graphics non TMSS model 1 (best audio preamp circuits and discrete Yamaha IC) with Sonic 1 just looping at the first level music blasted on the Klipsch 2.1.
