Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) of course... One of the greatest songs.

Hotel California (The Eagles) is also a good one, and will be remembered. Several songs by Queen such as We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, will be remembered for a very long time.

Money (Pink Floyd), I will not forget that one! Stray Cat Strut (The Stra Cats) .... Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd) ... several songs by CCR ... NUMEROUS Beatles songs (Twist and Shout, hehehe.. yellow submarine, penny lane, hey jude, strawberry fields, etc etc)...

So many I can't even think ..

Newer people .. Well, sadly I can't think of many new bands taht will be remembered. Perhaps the red hot chili peppers, i think they have good talent and will not be forgotten.

Oasis (which somehow always reminds me of the beatles) pretty much has "Wonderwall" going for them, it is a good song ... but I don't know too many more by them that will be remembered for long.

Green Day will most likely be forgotten quickly, except for maybe a couple memorable songs that may stick around (Hitchin' A Ride, Brainstew, Time of Your Life).

Goldfinger is really good IMO, and will probably be remembered... Blink 182 will be remembered but not as a good band in my mind (come on, when you hear songs like Adam's song and Dammit, you gotta think .. did they get a small child to write that music?). No offense to any blink lovers, and please don't flame me.

Actually, the songs on that album are all sooo much better than that song. In fact, the LP they released afterwards (Scoundrel Days) was even better than Hunting High and Low.

I think their perspective on this is unimportant. What matters is how other perceive it and what value they assign to the song. I'm sure Nirvana only really liked what they did with Steve Albini since they were such devout followers of his work in Big Black and Rapeman.

Slayer - Angel of Death <- this song made Slayer popular
Carcass - Exhume to Consume <- humourous death metal from the UK
Neil Diamond - America, Song Sung Blue, Sweet Caroline <- Neil Diamond has too many hits to list
Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual <- makes me think of Austin Powers
GG Allin - Suck My Ass It Smells <- he probably wasn't lying
Mentors - Golden Showers <- makes me want to take a shower over and over
Meatmen - Tooling for 4nus <- h4xx0r style
Deicide - Sacrificial Suicide <- it has a good beat and is easy to dance to

So many pop songs on here. Don't you people get into any other music they've played on MTV or pop radio?! American alternative doesn't count since the corporates have raped &quot;alternative music&quot; and made it pop drivel.

My dad used to wake me up on Saturdays with his stereo cranked, pushing some huge tower Polk Audios, shaking the house, playing that song. Sometimes he would play Aaron Copeland-Fanfare for the Common Man. Another timeless classic.

well, I agree w/ Nirvana, I think the entire Nevermind, or at least a good portion of it, is pretty much timeless classic.

Why the heck you leave out Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit? That is DA Song, and All Apologies, Lithium, In Bloom...

All depends on the timeframe you're talking about.... if you're looking more than a year or decade down the road, the music that will 'stand the test of time' will be: from the
early half of the 20th century, big band and jazz (Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, etc.); from the later half, Motown and rock-n-roll (James Brown, The Supremes, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc.)
