What's with all this John Mayer crap lately? He just seems like a Dave Matthews clone. >>
I'm a huge Dave Matthews fan and a huge John Mayer fan and I don't think they're similar at all.
They are completely different styles of music. Not to mention that DMB features (quite prominently) a sax and violin and takes much more of a ensemble approach. DMB's music is rooted in funk, reggae, and bluegrass. Mayer's roots are blues and jazz. Lyrical styles are also polar opposites. Mayer writes very down-to-earth songs about his life that anyone can relate to. Dave writes very esoteric, metaphorical lyrics with a palpable social consciousness to them. The only similarity that has any merit is their voices, but that is only on the surface... they're really quite different.
You're not the only one to make that comparison, but I've still yet to understand the reasons behind it. To be honest, I think it's because it's difficult to compare music like Mayer's to anything else that's currently popular. DMB is the closest thing anyone can come up with. But that is changing... 2002 is marking the return of the singer-songwriter with John Mayer leading the way.
