A son who battered his abusive father with a hammer in a bid to stop him from attacking his mother has been jailed for six years.
Benjamin Wilson grabbed the heavy weapon and raced upstairs at the family home after hearing crashing, shouting and commotion coming from the bedroom.
Wilson, 22, then went into the room and beat his 46-year-old dad Craig with the weapon after claiming he was defending his mother.

what a fucking travesty.

kids a hero.

the dad is a waste of oxygen.

Bashing the father in the 6 times with seems excessive to me. He had 6 holes in his head from the hammer.

I see this is the UK. Self defense laws there require that only "reasonable force" be used. Apparently, the jury didn't think that was reasonable.

When I first read "jailed", I thought big deal, they are just holding him until trial or whatever. Then I see he got 6 years in what we would call prison. That kind of sucks for defending your mom.

Clearly in the UK your just suppose to die or let family members die...

Note that the son had also done prison time for actual abuse in the past as well.

That does suck. Hopefully, there can be more done for him. But at the end of the day, I'd take the 6 years to know my mom is safe.

I think it was the father who did the 2year stint for abuse.

Mr Wilson Snr, who once served a two-year sentence for assaulting his wife, drank heavily and was being verbally abusive and making threats at a family party at the parents’ Norton home

Ah might have skipped over the snr part... since none of that made sense with the dad having being in prison for abuse in the past.

Typical of the UK and most other western countries, complete idiocy. They should pin a medal on the kid for ridding the society of that scum.

In the UK you need to escalate self defense in a gradual and deliberate, controlled manner to ensure you are not violating the rights of the attacker.

It sounds like he went too far and let rage get the best of him though. On the other hand this is a man who spent two years in prison for domestic abuse already, probably made his family's life a living hell. I would have a hard time being on a jury and putting this guy in prison for six years even if he did let his rage get the best of him and probably try and murder dad. Funny thing is if his only weapon had been a knife and he had stabbed his dad in the throat just once he would have been let of I bet.

Next time don't use a hammer or other metal object. Maybe a stick? Or your fist?

He smashed the guys skull in... multiple times. I think he has some issues to work through and prison is probably the place to do it.

So his danger to society is he may rage out if someone beats his mother? I think society may benefit from this guy.

You think prison is a good place for a person to work through issues of systemic abuse? No empathy, no heart. Get grounded, please.

Donkey Kong shows us that one solid thwack will do. But, when a drunk is beating your mother, "How can I resolve this using minimal force without escalating the situation while simultaneously minimizing damage to all parties" is probably not at the fore front of a persons mind. Hard for a calm juror sitting in safe box to wrap themselves around that though.

Come on, it's UK prison man. They'll feed him and cloth him and let him out after a year or so, it's not like it is in the US where they farm prisoners and keep them forever.

If it was the US I'd agree that prison would not be OK. But he killed somebody.

If it was me I would have used the nail pulling side to let it sink in deeper.

A Jackass like the father has no need to have a beating heart.

the father wasn't killed, he still walks and maybe he'll get help with his alcoholism. if he isn't drunk he seems like a reasonable guy.

Seems like a perfect case for jury nullification. Or there may be a little more to this story.

Not only did dad not die but apparently wished his son good luck in court. Seems like a guy who should never touch alcohol ever again.
