Ok, I'm at a friends house who has a cable broadband. I want to download some stuff, but I would like to be able to hook the cable modem up to my computer because he doesnt have a cd burner either. I tried pluggin it in, and Windows XP said to open hit "repair" on my network card, but after waiting a while it just said that it failed on the step "renewing the ip address". I'd appreciate any help on how to set this up. Thank you!

Are you using comcast? Perhaps it is refusing to work because your network card doesn't have the right MAC address.

Go into the services section of administrative tools under the control panel and make sure DHCP service is enabled. Try restarting it if it is already running.

Try resetting the cable modem by pulling the plug on it for 30 secs.

That should clear it for your NIC's MAC.
