Somewhat urgent: Domain for login in Windows 2000

For some reason the login box for Windows 2000 Professional isn't showing a domain to logon to.

My dad tried changing it from a domain to a workgroup, which caused it to stop showing it.

How can we get that back?

well, if you guys removed the comp from the domain, you're pretty much hosed. You'd have to get the PC back to the office and rejoin it to the domain with admin rights.

Yup, my wife did this same thing to her work laptop trying to access the home network. She had to send the laptop back to the corporate IT department to add the domain back.

Then how the hell did he remove it from the domain?

You're screwed unless you have access to the domain to re-add the machine account. That will require physical access unless the company uses VPN.

BTW any IT department which allows users the ability to remove themselves from the domain is just asking for trouble.

you can actually specify the domain name on user log on

domain\username
password

when you type login info like this domain will be greyed out

so is if you do this

username@domain.com
password

oh nm my post your dad is stupid for taking the computer out of the domain in the first place, we call those people here "users" and thats exactly why they don't belong in the group "administrators"

can't remove a computer from a domain with local admin. must have at least domain admin rights for that.
but then you have to know the password of a local account (administrator) to be able to use the machine after the fact.

Your wife is a nightmare for IT depts around the land ;)

I dont know how many times outside people would take their computer off the network so they can print at home and then cant get on and have to send it back. That equals taking away admin privs.

btw even if you managed to get into the box as an admin you need to be in the correct domain group\acct to add the machine back to the domain.

You can take a machine off the domain with a local admin account. You cant add the machine without a domain account with that privledge.

You cant add the machine without a domain account with that privledge.

Which, by the way, all users have the ability to do, up to 10 times (by default).
