Building a new system and even taking the plunge with Vista...but on my old computer which runs XP I have somewhere around 8-10 GBs of data I want to transfer over, mostly pictures, files, etc. I've got access to 2 monitors so I can have both running at the same time. I read that Vista has a file transfer program and if thats true then it's easy as pie.

But is it really that easy??

Just a little help on the issue would be nice before I start building my new rig.

The easiest way is to plug in the old HDD after building your new rig and simply copy the files you want to your new HDD. If that's not possible, you only have 8-10GB of data, you can just burn to dvd's.

And vista and XP arent gonna fight when I plug that old HDD in? Thats my biggest concern at the moment. But if it's as easy as that then yea I'll do exactly that.

You will only have problems if Vista and XP are installed to the same drive. You can select which drive to boot from in the BIOS.

Or you can use the foolproof approach:
First install Vista. When that is done, plug in the old HDD (remember to turn off the power first ;-)

I think thats what I'll do. I know it seems like such a dumb question but I just want my old data, and especially want all my DSLR pictures.

To early for vista :p I would wait.

Perhaps but I look at it in the way that in another year everyone will have Vista. Plus I dont have many legacy devices. My mouse and keyboard are wireless microsoft and I already checked compatibility. Otherwise there is no real reason for me to stay in XP.
