Somewhat new. I have a question about CPU/Socket

I am currently running a AMD 64 X2 4800 (on a socket 939, DDR)

Question #1 Is there any CPU that will still run on this socket that would give me a decent performance upgrade?

Question #2 If I switched over to an Intel Duo 6700 (not the quad) would there be a big difference over the 4800?

I appreciate any inof on this, thanks so much

1 No, not really.

2 for benchmarks or maybe for gaming if you are cpu bound (which would pretty well only be if you have an 8800 series) but for everyday stuff my c2d 6600 actually "feels" a little slower than my old box with a x2 3800, i think due to the higher latency to memory.
 
thanks rgreen for the reply. I may hold off a little then. So far the 4800 has been a great performer, I just was curious if I was missing anything big by not running the new core duos
 
I wouldn't put any credence in what rgreen says. The latency in the memory means nothing as it is running at a higher frequency. Also the C2D 6600 will run laps around an x2 3800 in basically everything that it does. I am guessing maybe something is wrong on his end. If you switched to an E6700 there would be a NOTICEABLE difference in computer performance.
 
That all depends on what you do with your computer. You never said. If you mostly game, spend your money on a better video card, because your processor is fast enough. If you're doing video editing, then you'd definitely see a big difference between your 4800 and an E6700. You could also overclock your processor by 200 Mhz or so, and get more speed out of it, assuming you have a motherboard that will allow you to overclock.

(1)- Certainly not

(2)- In most things, not really. As said, encoding is one such area, or F@H, or playing with huge archives. But worth the $$ right now over what you already have? Nah.

Wait another 6 months or so, then check again. You already have an outstanding cpu.
