Hi everyone,

I built my computer with the gracious help of everyone here. Here are the current specs:

Intel Core i5-760
ASUS P7P55D-E LGA 1156 SATA 6gb/s USB 3.0
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600 (PC3 12800)
MSI Geforce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 7200RPM HDD
Samsung 2TB F4 5400RPM HDD
Antec 300 Case
Corsair 650TX PSU
Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
Windows 7 64bit

I have pretty much been running it 24/7 since December 2010. But at random times (not regular intervals) the motherboard makes a weird whine. It sounds like the same whine it makes when I turn on the computer for the first time, like when everything is warming/booting up. But nothing happens and Windows stays the same (albeit maybe a split second of lag)

Should I be concerned?

Thank you for your help.

Are you sure it's coming from the board? Maybe it's the optical drive. Unplug it and turn it on.

if there is disk in ODD than it might be it, but if there is no disk and still that happens it might be HDD. reason i say cause you felt lag spike and sometimes HDD does make those spinning noise and halt things for sec.

Yeah I agree, at first I read that like the noise was at start-up. Could also be the GPU fan.

sure enough there was a disc inside; I slapped myself on my forehead for leaving it in but I'll see if it continues to make that noise.

I'd hate to think that it's the hard drive but if so I'll start backing stuff up just to be sure.

thank you for everyone's help! it's much appreciated :D

not long after I took the disc out from the drive did my computer make that whine again before I had to leave for work. So I guess I can rule the optical drive out. Thanks again for your help. There hasn't been a real problem after running the computer 24/7 for almost 3 months but it just worries me a bit.
