Somewhat general video card question

I'm thinking about buying a video card for my girlfriend. She is a Graphics Communication major and uses some Macromedia software, and programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark (PC). If she was a gamer then I would know what video card to buy, but since most of the stuff she works on is 2d I was wondering if there are cards that perform better for that. I'm looking for something in the $250 dollar range (right now I'm thinking about going with the 9600xt).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

Welcome JiDuB ! I'm not the best one to answer your, but at least you'll get a bump. Anyway when this type of question has been previously asked Matrox is a name I see alot. Perhaps you should check those out. Anyway hold tight, someone will come along with a good answer :)

For 2d apps a powerful card is usually not necessary. The most important factor would probably be image the 2d image quality, which matrox cards are very good at. A 9600xt would probably be in some ways overkill, since it is aimed more for 3d graphics.
