I got mine the other day after 1 MONTH of waiting! It was a SANYO so i said the heck with this and was taking it back. Now i had gotten lucky and gotten it for $99 (i call 2 weeks ago and griped at a CSR and he took off the $30 rebate) so i wanted to have a HOT deal. Got the Idea to take it back to the local Compusa. They took it back and Gave me a $303.95 Gift Card!!!

Now that is a good return on the money $300 gift card for $99!

Swift move, thief.

P.S. regarding your sig: "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he did not exist."

I think his second greatest trick was ripping off a retail store by returning an item he bought on sale and getting a store credit for 3x the price he paid for the item.

I don't see how ripping off a store by doing something you KNEW was not right is a hot deal.

There's a very fine line between getting a "hot deal" on something and just "plain stealing". I think you crossed that line.

That's old. ccity had talked about it already in 2 other threads. I don't know if I can call that stealing, (I would like to), but that's at the least dishonest and trying to rip off CompUSA.

Actually, I think it is a very bright line, and what Kuroc described is way over that line.

shucks, does anyone want to SELL their Sanyo? Rather than rip off CompUSA, you can happily rip me off. =) LMK

One time I went to CompUSA heavy. Although the cashier was cooperative, I pistol whipped her just for the drama. I walked right out the front door with a brand new Plextor - completely free, no questions asked. That was a hot deal.

Wow CentralScrutinizer sounds pretty bitter!

First of all: caveat emptor - buyer beware so the reverse should be true too.
He did not threaten them or coerce them to give him that money. All he did was return it and they gave it to him. So calling him a theif is unfounded. He did not steal this money. No it was not the most honest thing to do but if they had charged him $300 for the same item, I don't see them coming to him and adjusting the price. It would be up to him to get some type of credit for the incorrect pricing. If companies or employees can't keep track of such things then they deserve to go out of business. So I totally think you have blown this out of proportion.

What about if your bank made a mistake and credited your account with a large sum of money, would you try to keep it and not report it? What do you think will happen when the bank finds out, especially after you try to use that money?

So...if I knowingly take money that does not belong to me and I don't have to threaten or coerce anyone and that person has no idea that I took the money from them...it's ok. NO WAY.

Bottom line is that what kuroc did was wrong. Yeah kuroc got an extra $200 in his pocket...but that $200 didn't come out of thin air. Someone does have to directly or indirectly pay for that $200...most likely in the form of higher prices, less lenient return policies, etc...all of which eventually hurts the end consumers (us). While CompUSA isn't my favorite store, I have gotten some very good deals from them in the past and yes I would miss them if they went out of business. Competition is what keeps prices down and hot deals alive...after all isn't that what we are all here for?

SinMen - First of all if a bank credits you money without you're doing anything then you'd be foolish to think that they won't be able to balance their books and find their money. This is different than the above situation.

Wolverine27- You are basing this on the assumption that the money is not his. How do you make this assumption? It is a transaction, he is giving CompUSA a product that he bought and they are giving him the money for that product. Whether it is above or below the price he paid is irrelevant. It is what CompUSA is willing to pay him. So it is his money if they are willing to give it to him. Of course the money will come from somewhere, money doesn't grow on trees. I never said it was the honest "boy scout" thing to do, but again if it's caveat emptor than the reverse should be true too.

Bottom line is it comes out of CompUSA's bottom line. He in glass houses should not throw stones. I take it no one in this discussion has ever tried to stack coupons or use the new customer coupons at buy.com more than once or tried to use the ebates and MSN passbook discounts together? Can you say that you have never tried any of these types of things? Where was the drum beating when these threads were active?

In my defense, I tried to exchange mine for the same model (plextor) and they did not have it, so I asked the woman if I could exchange it for another CD burner that cost less or add the difference to a more expensive one and she said yes. I am guessing that Compusa paid about the same for the 12X Zip CD and the 12X TDK so I was just switching what item they had on sale. I dont think what I did was over the line, although maybe questionable...

by the way, seller beware is: Caveat Venditor

as always, yodayoda is trying to improve the intellectual level of anandtech discussions. now to lower it:

f*ck compusa! they are the biggest ripoff artists in the computer industry! turn-about is fair play, so you shouldn't have any regrets on this one. but i still think a sanyo 12x burner is not that bad and you should have just kept it.

So if I go get money from the ATM, and then stupid ATM is "WILLING" to spit out more than what I ask for, then it's OK for me to keep it?

No, I do not stack coupons (if you are not suppose to), nor set up more than 1 new buy.com account, nor use ebates with Passport, even when I am a SINMEN

Nitzlypick,

First of all I'm not bashing...we are free to disagree in the spirit of debate. I'm just calling it like I see it...and I don't believe in "rationalizing" what kuroc did as being "ok". Is kuroc a bad person for doing this? No. Would most of us be tempted by such luck? Probably. But did kuroc get additional money that did not belong to him in the first place? Yes.

The additional $200 not belonging to kuroc is not an assumption...it is fact. By kuroc's own admission, he paid only $99 for the drive. So what is fair and right is that kuroc get's HIS $99 back...not and extra $200 on top of what he originally paid for it. And I also doubt that CompUSA WILLINGLY gave him that extra $200. They just didn't know about it and were probably being nice by taking back the drive without a receipt. Had they known what kuroc originally paid, I'm sure the story would be quite different. Is the error CompuUSA's fault? No doubt about it. Is it kuroc's duty to point out the error to CompUSA? That's a question of conscience...most of us probably wouldn't have done it either or thought real long and hard about keeping the money. But there is no way in hell you are going to rationalize to me that what happened was perfectly ok.
