...sigh....

Got a call from a manger this morning saying she got an email with a virus on it, and that it infected a couple of our locations. Told her to unplug her network cable (to stop it from emailing stuff out) and I'd get over to look at it in a bit.

She got back to me before I got a chance to get to it, said that she took care of it, and brought me a printout of the specific "virus".

Here's what the message was:

Our association was infected by the virus jdbgmrg.exe and we think you might have received it as well. To get rid of the virus, follow the instructions below :
1. Go to START and select SEARCH then FOR FILES OR FOLDERS
2. In the window SEARCH FOR FILES OR FOLDERS, type the virus name:jdbgmgr.exe
3 The window LOOK IN should indicate a search in the hard drive "C"

Turns out she deleted this file on a couple machines. Ugh. It's a file that has to do with java and it's ability to function properly. I guess it could have been worse, she could have deleted explorer.exe

Aint that the truth! The worst are those people with "Virii-type information."

Virii-Type Information = Just enough knowledge to ruin the entire system they use, rather than just a small part.

On a lighter note, I always enjoyed those calls where the person whose machine had the initial virus, was still in their email client, double clicking the offending .EXE program over and over again wondering why she couldnt get the "Snow white & seven dwarves film clip to run." While the rest of the office was in chaos about why their email server was being bombarded to a stand still.

Have had that happen too (with the same hoax), but most people at work now ask before doing stuff like that, or even bookmark the hoax lookup pages I send them back the first time they ask me.

I know a couple people that deleted the same thing. They get some email saying to delete that file, which has a picture of a teddy bear next to it, so people tend to automatically think it's an evil file. When I got that email, I of course read up about the file first to see if it was a hoax, and sure enough it was. Some people just have no clue about this whole internet thing.
