Sometimes only 1 CPU detected during boot

I've a E6850 CPU, normally the bootup display shows 2 CPUs, but sometimes it only shows 1 and then would get stuck in that stage and not continue POST further. Strangely disconnecting one of my USB HDs seems to help it get beyond this stage, after a reboot, though I'm not 100% certain whether that's directly related. Of course during a correct boot it'll show 2 CPUs again. When it does boot into the OS both CPUs seem to work fine.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before? Could it be power related? I'm running a 8800GTX, 1 optical, and 3 HDs off of a 500W power supply. No OC either.

Booting with USB devices connected can cause a wide array of strange happenings.

No fixes that I know.
