So I bought a EP45-UD3P and a 4870 1GB to refresh my PC. I got them both in and got to installing. Old stuff out, new stuff in, the normal.

Then as I was putting on my Xigmatek I noticed that the darn screw had stripped out the threads where the mount attaches to the heatsink, so my xigmatek has been on the verge of falling on my 9800GT :Q . Luckily I had an old intel cooler around for interim use but theres no way I can overclock with that

So I bought a TRUE

Anywho, intel cooler on (and the crappy 1" tall one too, I cant find the old copper core one I have) and I keep going. I get everything nice and finished and plug it in and start up. Immediately I notice my computer is way too quiet. I look down in the open side panel and lo and behold, the fan on my 4870 is DOA. picard.jpg. So, as any PC enthusiast would have done, I took this as a sign from the gods that I hadn't bought a fast enough GPU

So I bought a 4890

Then I figure, I don't want to be here in a few more days with a shiny new 4890 with a borked fan, so to be sure everything works right out of the box....

I bought a Scythe Musashi

(my Accellero is too thick for future xfire)

Then I think to myself, my Silverstone 500w would be pushing it for 4890 xfire and my intended upgrade soon to something Q9550 esque, and since it only has two pci-e connectors...

I'm trying to convince myself not to buy a PSU

Someone stop me before my bank account implodes!

Doctor David's diagnosis is that you have Upgradeitis.

On the other hand, go for it and buy a new PSU :D

This is coming from someone who has spent £480 (or $700) on four lots of RAM in the last six months or so, so I'm probably not the best person to advise you:
2x 1GB OCZ Gold Edition 1333MHz DDR3 RAM - £75 (for a X48 MB)
2x 2GB OCZ Platinum Edition 1800MHz DDR3 RAM - £185 (for a X48 MB).

I then upgraded to I7 (X58 MB) and bought:
6x 2GB Corsair XMS3 1600MHz DDR3 RAM - £175 (with 1 module borked, which I need to RMA).
3x 1GB OCZ Gold Edition 1333MHz DDR3 RAM - £45 (to tide me over whilst the Corsair RAM is RMA'd)

It just shows how much DDR3 RAM has come down in price.

And we wonder why software developers market bloatware with obvious creeping featuritis. Same disease, slightly different symptoms.

Just out of curiosity, what'd you have before the UD3P? And do you plan on replacing the 4870 fan and trying 4870+4890 xfire just for the hell of it (though I'm guessing you probably want to send the 4870 back for a refund ASAP)?

In about 6 months, all of that will be worth about 25% of their price.

I had a temporary EP43-DS3L ( I broke my brothers P5B so I had to give him my P5Q) which was fine, but I wanted to be able to go for Xfire, plus I needed more SATA ports. Yeah I've already sent the 4870 back to newegg for a refund. I'll use the 4890 thats coming for a few months til the 5xxx series comes out and prices on 4890s drop even more + a plethora of used ones available

And eureka, I'm not new to this game, I know how it works. Also, stop exaggerating :p I bought my 9800GT last summer for $100 and just sold it for $70 (im using a 7600gt as interim GPU). I bought my 4890 for I think 160AR and should have no problem selling it for ~90-100 later on

And I think I got myself talked out of buying a PSU til I get my second 4890, but now I'm looking at HSPC top deck open tech benches :X
