Sometimes I hate my job

I just got done doing a conference bid with some resident hicks in TN for a job on a hospital in Greeneville, and their stupidity astounds me. I priced an entire system $50,000 less than the next lowest bidder, but I lost the job because I didn't used "rifled flex duct." I asked the guy why that mattered, and he told me, in all sincerity, "Because if it's rifled, the air will go straighter, faster."
Obviously this guy doesn't understand that the air follows the path of the duct anyway, and the speed is controlled by the fan. I tried to explain this to him, but to no avail. When one of the top 50 Mechanical Contracters in the country offeres to do a job for $50,000 less than some local company, you'd think people would be smart enough to take it. Stupid people piss me off. Oh well, now I just have to find another way to turn up a 2.5 million dollar job before the end of the month. :|

Be glad you're bidding jobs. All my State jobs cancelled their contracts ( THANKS to CA politicians). and I've been beating the bushes all week.
Know any LowVoltage/Audio/Video Electrical jobs need doing? :D

2.5 million is a big job? Geez, I design and build about two or three $6 million jobs a month. ;)

Anyway, I just looked at the plans, and no segment of flex runs for more than 6 feet. Rifling 6 feet of duct is a complete waste of money.

I work for the state as a contracts manager, I HAD TO cancel 2 of my contracts because of the stupid legislative a$$holes not getting a budget passed in time.

I hate working for the state because of this... there are 1000s of small business contractors that rely on the state of CA for thier livelyhood and we just trashed them because politicians can't get thier heads out thier a$$.

sorry I had to hijack the thread and vent, because as much as any of you hate your job, I know Ii hate mine just the same. Working for the state drains you of your life, there is no other way to put it.

Yup, that's why our company policy forbids entering into a job contracted by any government agency. We hate the way they do business, and we hate the amount they pay. Private sector is much better.

Don't worry, I have to deal with this almost everyday. I try my hardest to explain what AT&T and T-Mobile are to a customer and all I get is a huge blank stare and a, "HUH? Can you explain that to me again, I don't understand."

Everyday! So sometimes I hate my job, sometimes I don't. I'm just like you!

Although the fan controls the air speed, ducting that bends at 90 degree angles will pull more resistance due to inertial compression. So by creating a more smoother/straighter path, the fan doesn't have to do as much work because of less back pressure. And less heat is being lost at the impact spot.

Depending on the length of the duct, tees and elbows' static pressure usually doesn't have a great effect on the total system.

Now would you really want a contract with someone like that? Think about it.

2.5 million is 2.5 million, and I've got a quota to meet. So yes, even though I would probably have more stupid problems than it was worth. But it would save me the trouble of having to rush for another job within 5 days.

It's not all Davis' fault, imo. I recall a certain Rep. Gov. selling us the benefits of energy deregulation and why we should let the ones who would sell us power write the law. Those would be the ones that "turned us over the barrel" since then, but I could be wrong.
BTW, all of my jobs were with schools who were upgrading their sound systems after,in some cases, 40 years. The ones that are affected are the VOLUNTEER Parents who staff these artistic and dramatic and music programs, since there seems to be more need to hire and enrich prison guards than teachers.
< Sorry , end of hijack......

Sad thing is, I'm not in sales. I'm an engineer, I'm supposed to design them. However, for some reason, they like to double me up as both. My boss tells me they're preparing to bump me up to upper management, but they've said that for quite awhile now.
